Eurocommunism was an attempt in the 1970s by various European communist parties to widen their appeal by embracing public sector middle-class workers, and new social movements such as feminism and gay liberation and rejecting unquestioning support of the Soviet Union, and express more clearly their fidelity to democratic institutions.
It was precisely those Communist parties most strongly entrenched in their respective societies – notably the Italian Communist Party and the French Communist Party – that were most likely to adopt a Eurocommunist line, while smaller and more marginal parties remained correspondingly more dependent upon the patronage of Moscow.
Prominent parties influenced by its outside of Europe were (Venezuela), Japanese Communist Party and the Communist Party of Australia.

The communists were brutal in their suppression of competing leftist organizations, which led to the party's ostracism by the other anti-Franco forces in the post-Civil War period.
At the party congress in February 1987, Hernandez was chosen to head the AP, declaring that under his leadership the AP would become a "modern right-wing European party." But Hernandez lacked political experience at the national level, and the party continued to decline.
Spain's system of political parties was complicated by the existence of regional parties that were active both at the regional level, and, when they had seats in the Cortes, at the national level.

PCE was a small party during the initial years of the Republic, until it began to grow due to the victory of the Popular Front (of which the Communists had been a constituent part) in February of 1936 and the beginning of the Spanish Civil War in July of that year.
The party was legalized on April 9, 1977 as one of the last steps in the transtion to democracy in Spain.
In 1985 Carrillo was expelled from the party.

The movement became known as Eurocommunism and was especially strong in Italy, Spain, and France as well as in Japan, Australia, and Venezuela.

We normally expect communist countries to also be authocracies (that is to say dictatorships), and democracies to be capitalist but its possible for a autocracy to be capitalist and concievable for a communist nation to be a democracy.
Rather, we as Americans note that _command economies_ (that is to say Socialism and Communism) have a stronger trend toward Autocracy and away from Democracy than capitalist countries because Communism centralizes control and limits the basic freedom of its citizens to spend and invest the fruits of thier own labor as they desire.

Dear comrades, we have just learned of the passing of comrade Ray Stevenson, it is indeed a great loss for the whole movement in solidarity with the people’s of the ex-Soviet Union as well as for the whole communist international movement.
Secondly, we must ask, at what level does the Second Congress and the International Council, the readers of NSC and its subscribers, friends and comrades from afar, how can we support in the most positive fashion the future tasks and challenges ahead.
Many of these parties and movements are not being subjected to persecutions and are currently actively working within the legal realm of the system.
