Since amateur theatre is such a general term for that sort of theatre see there.
However in the UK a new form of community theatre is growing which is one with professional theatre links.
However given the growth of repertory, Theatre in Education, footlights and fringe theatre in the UK and (Off-Off Broadway in America) and their impact on mainstream drama the impact of community theatre cannot be underestimated.

I joined Jigsaw Youth Theatre (Dudley) in 1978 at the age of 13, little knowing the effect it would have upon me. I attended many national youth theatre festivals, and the Edinburgh festival, and joined the National Youth Theatre.
Jigsaw is a member of the National Association of Youth Theatres.

I joined Jigsaw Youth Theatre in 1978 and went on from there to join the National Youth Theatre in 1981 before completing a drama degree at Bretton Hall College in 1988.
I went on to complete a masters degree in Educational Theatre at Leeds and qualified as a Dramatherapist at Hertfordshire University in 1996, and completed management training at the Open University in 1999.
I was very fortunate to run a week long drama project for mental health users in Barrow in Furnace in Cumbria in January 2003.(part of MIND national mental health charity) This was an excellent project which I would very much like to repeat.
