DETROIT (Reuters) - Three new small sport utility vehicles earned "good" ratings in insurance industry crash tests, highlighting the auto industry's move toward safer small SUVs, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety said on Tuesday.
The offset tests seek to gauge how well occupants would survive in a vehicle if the driver's side of the front end plowed into a barrier at 40 miles per hour.
"Adding more small SUVs to those good ratings is further proof that manufacturers are working to improve the performances of their new designs in offset tests," Brian O'Neill, the institute's president, said in a statement.
