Compact group -- Facts, Info, and Encyclopedia article   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
In (A science (or group of related sciences) dealing with the logic of quantity and shape and arrangement) mathematics, a compact (topological, often understood) group is a (additional info and facts about topological group) topological group that is also a (additional info and facts about compact space) compact space.
Such groups G have a well-understood theory, in relation to (Action taken by a group of people) group actions and (additional info and facts about representation theory) representation theory, at least when G is also assumed to be (additional info and facts about Hausdorff) Hausdorff.
Compact groups all carry a (additional info and facts about Haar measure) Haar measure, which will be invariant by both left and right translation (since the (additional info and facts about modulus function) modulus function must be a continuous (Similarity of form) homomorphism to the positive multiplicative reals, and so 1).

Open problems in homotopy theory of Lie groups
A major open problem in the homotopy theory of Lie groups is the classification of 2-compact groups, analogous to the classification of compact Lie groups.
The theory of p-local finite groups is a novel theory which aims to formalize the p-local structure found in finite groups, in much the same way as p-compact groups does it for compact (connected) Lie groups.
The p-local finite group of a group G roughly carries information about the Sylow p-subgroup S as well as information about which subgroups in it are conjugate or ``fused'' in G. Not all p-local finite groups come from finite groups, but the exceptions seem to be rather limited.

Compact Galaxy Group Hickson 79   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-08)
It is the most compact group in the catalog, so small that it would fit entirely within the Milky Way galaxy.
To help with research aimed at investigating this theory, Paul Hickson has identified 100 compact galaxy groups where most of the members seem to be interacting, and are very close together.
This seems to be the case with one member of this group.

Each day a different image or photograph of our fascinating universe is featured, along with a brief explanation written by a professional astronomer.
group of galaxies is a system containing more than two galaxies but less than the tens or hundreds typically found in a cluster of galaxies.
Many galaxies in compact groups are either slowly merging or gravitationally pulling each other apart.

 HubbleSite - A Minuet of Galaxies - 9/2/1999
This troupe of four galaxies, known as Hickson Compact Group 87 (HCG 87), is performing an intricate dance orchestrated by the mutual gravitational forces acting between them.
This Hubble telescope image reveals complex details in the dust lanes of the group's largest galaxy member (HCG 87a), which is actually disk-shaped, but tilted so that we see it nearly edge-on.
A third group member, the nearby spiral galaxy 87c, may be undergoing a burst of active star formation.

UCSC Compact Object Group: Pulsars, an Introduction
If the binary is sufficiently wide, the companion will continue its evolution as if it were an isolated star.
However, if the binary is sufficiently compact, the surface of the companion will eventually come into contact with its Roche surface, and begin transferring mass (and angular momentum) to the neutron star, spinning it up to shorter rotation periods.
During this stage, the system will be visible as a luminous X-ray binary.
