A set is compact if whenever we cover it with infinitely many open sets, there is always enough redundancy in the covering that we can select finitely many of the covering sets to do the job.
Although the hypotheses in the two statements are different (this example assumes that the domain is compact; Proposition 6.21 assumed that the domain was sequentially compact), the hypotheses ammount to the same.
This is because compact metric spaces and sequentially compact metric spaces are exactly the same things.
