HHScott Vacuum Tubes -- Compactron Overview
Compactrons are multi-function tubes, combining diodes, triodes, and pentodes in various combinations, designed to reduce size and component counts in entertainment and industrial devices.
Compactrons have 12 pins arranged around a 3/4-inch diameter base.
GE engineers claimed a two-Compactron radio design could replace a standard five-tube radio complement (seven transistors were needed for the same performance), or a 10-Compactron TV-set could replace 15 tubes and three diodes or 24 transistors and 11 diodes.

Use of a compactron allows a lot of receiver to be contained in a small box without undue crowding.
the headphones are operated from the pentode section of the compactron, and the phone jack (J4) is arranged to disconnect the speaker when the phones are in use.
All parts of the receiver, with the exception of the spare-coil rack, and the trap door for coil changing, are mounted on the portion of the chassis box used to form the front panel and sides.

Initial versions did not have compactron capability which was added with the "A" revision.

They are available in four basic sizes: a "Compactron" type, a 9-pin type in a conventional tube envelope, a medium size, and a miniature type, each with flying leads.
The "Compactron" type and the two smaller cells are end-illuminated, while the fourth is side-illuminated.
The "Compactron" type Z-2946 and the conventional-tube envelope type 7427 are all-glass, while the medium-size cell Z-2963 and the miniature Z-2755-1 are of metal-to-glass construction.

For instance, an early type of multi-section tube, the 6SN7, is a "dual triode" which, for most purposes, can perform the functions of two triode tubes, while taking up half as much space and costing less.
The 6AG11 Compactron tube contained two triodes and two diodes.
Currently the world's most popular vacuum tube is the 12AX7, with estimated annual worldwide sales of greater than 2 million units.

 Audio Amplifiers From TV Compactrons
It wouldn't have to play loud enough for the whole neighbourhood to hear it but it would need to be higher in sound quality than the typical portable or clock radio.
In addition to this the question has arisen of what to do with an accumulation of Compactron type television vacuum tubes that will never be used in television service again.
I concluded that these two concerns might answer each other and that working on them together might be a good way to go.

The Compactron is a 12-pin vacuum tube family introduced in 1961 by General Electric in Owensboro, Kentucky with the express purpose of keeping tubes in the market for a few more years during the solid state revolution.
A distinguishing feature of Most Compactrons is the placement of the seal-off tip on the bottom end, rather than the top end as was customary with "miniature" tubes.

Anyone come across the GE Compactron version of the AA5?
Supposedly they did it with two envelopes: http://www.elecdesign.com/Articles/ArticleID/4554/4554.html Also found this one-Compactron AA5 circuit using the imaginary 117AA16 tube -- theoretically possible with a 17-pin socket: http://pw2.netcom.com/~wa2ise/radios/aa5-1t.html I had fun many years ago building a single-tube Compactron regenerative FM receiver.
GE used to have a great surplus store ("Op II") near their plant in Syracuse and you could buy the tubes there (along with test equipment and lots of other stuff) for pennies on the dollar.
