Dog - Encyclopedia.WorldSearch   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Dogs are predators and scavengers, possessing sharp teeth and strong jaws for attacking, holding, and tearing their food.
Dog packs are characterized by companionate hierarchy, in which each individual has a rank, and in which there is intense loyalty within the group.
Dog experts advise that dogs not intended for further breeding should be spayed or neutered so that they do not have undesired puppies, which are often abandoned or are euthanized due to lack of space and resources in shelters.

Dog show - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Dogs compete in a hierarchical fashion at each show, where winners at lower levels are gradually combined to narrow the winners until the final round, where Best in Show is chosen.
Strictly speaking, a dog show is not exactly a comparison of one dog to another, it is a comparison of each dog to a judge's concept of the ideal specimen as dictated by the breed standard; based on this, one dog is placed ahead of another.
Show dogs have a registered name, that is, the name under which they are registered as a purebred with the appropriate kennel club, and a call name, which is how their owners talk to them.

Dog Owner's Guide: Obed titles: CD
The first in a progression of obedience titles awarded by the American Kennel Club is the Companion dog title.
The rules require that the dog walk, on a loose leash, with the area between the dog's head and shoulders in line with the handler's left hip.
The dog must sit and stay where left by the handler until it is called, then go directly to the handler and sit in front.

The fourth title is the Utility Dog Excellent (U.D.X.) To earn this title you must pass both Utility B and Open B at the same show (same time) a total of 10 times.
Dogs which are owned by people who have obtained an OTCH title must compete in the Open B class.

 Dog Owner's Guide: CDX
The first exercise is the heeling pattern; as in the novice class, the dog is expected to remain at the left side of the handler, his head even with the handler’s left knee.
The third exercise is the retrieve “on the flat.” The dog sits in heel position, and, on instruction from the judge, the handler throws the dumbbell and sends the dog to retrieve it.
Training for the CDX title is much more difficult than training for the CD because it requires the dog to work away from the handler on the jumping exercises and the group sits and downs and requires a string of commands to complete the drop on recall and the retrieves.

 NOVICE  Competition
At this point the judge will walk up to the dog, lightly tap head, shoulders and lower back as he is walking around the dog and back to you.
The judge will then tell you to return to your dog and "exercise over" is the judges clue to you to release your dog from the stay command.
The judge will then say to return to your dog which you do, and when the judge says "exercise over" this is your clue to release the dog from its command.

If you and your dog are enjoying obedience and want to make it a career (so it will seem!), there are advanced titles that make use of the same classes as above.
The ultimate in obedience titles is the Obedience Championship, or the OTCH, which goes in front of the dog's name.
