The prevalence of company towns, at least in the coal industry, was related to the settlement of regions where mines were developed.
The relationship between employees and owners in company towns could be contentious and this in turn generated a series of complaints that were surprisingly similar across time.

A company town is a town or city in which all or almost all real estate, buildings (both residential and commercial), utilities, hospitals, small businesses such as grocery stores and gas stations, and other necessities or luxuries of life within its borders are owned by a single company.
Company towns were formed by the transcontinental railroads, which bought tracts of land flanking their right-of-way before deciding where to site stations.
Other times, a town may not officially be a company town, but it may be a town where the majority of citizens are employed by a single company, thus creating a similar situation to a company town (especially in regard to the town's economy).

 Eclipse Company Town
The Eclipse Company Town is located 2 miles north of Athens and Ohio University off U.S. Route 33 and Johnson Road near The Plains, Ohio, and right on the Hockhocking-Adena Bikeway.
The Eclipse Company Town was built by the Hocking Valley Coal Company between 1900 and 1902.
In 1997, Eclipse, Ltd. was formed by five friends who decided to take on restoration of the company town because of their interest in historic preservation, local history, and the Hockhocking-Adena Bike Path, which runs adjacent to the company town.

To provide a work force for their operations, companies needed to house employees and provide all the services and sometimes the amenities available in towns and cities too far for those workers to travel to.
Company towns die or are sold because the mine or mill that supported them closed, or because civilization moved close enough that workers could find places to live on their own.
In a sense, the company town is being reconfigured for a new era, partly as a perk to attract and retain employees (and, cynics might argue, to squeeze more work out of them).

In Delaware, we know a thing or two about company towns but few places I've ever been top Deadhorse and the oil fields at Prudhoe Bay.
From the video we watched before the tour, we learned that the oil companies have self contained towns within towns, complete with "healthy" meals (That was their expression, not mind) excercise rooms and housing.
One guy told me he signed up for five weeks, he was staying five weeks and he wouldn't stay another day even though they had already asked him to.
