Wireless LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A wireless LAN or WLAN is a wireless local area network that uses radio waves as its carrier: the last link with the users is wireless, to give a network connection to all users in the surrounding area.
WLAN is expected to continue to be an important form of connection in many business areas.
WLAN components are now cheap enough to be used in the home, with many being set-up so that one PC (a parent's PC, for example) can be used to share an internet connection with the whole family (whilst retaining access control at the parents' PC).

Comparing WLAN and LAN - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
This is seen as a big advantage, however ignoring the need to configure the Wireless LAN with the same care as a wired network is one of the main reasons that a company's biggest security 'hole' is often its Wireless LAN.
A Wireless LAN is especially suited to sites where a wired network could be very awkward (or expensive) to implement, such as large open spaces (including temporary sites and open plan offices), museums (and other old buildings) and 'one-off' usage (such as an exhibition or fair)
Changing the wireless LAN encryption key on a daily or weekly basis, and then 'rolling it out' (by some means other than 'plain text' emails) is an extra overhead that many Companies never manage to achieve.

WLAN is an alternative to cabled LAN in places where cabling is difficult or impossible.
WLAN installations are also cheap because they consist only of the access points and backbone network installations, the last part of the network being in the air.

However, new WLAN architectures are emerging that reduce capital expenditures and ease operational burdens, helping enterprises to reap the value of wireless with minimal impact on the bottom line.
Comparatively, the hierarchical WLAN architecture was designed with flexibility in mind in order to be used for a variety of applications, including mass network coverage.
To create a complete WLAN solution, enterprises using these products are forced to deploy a variety of different appliances to address these deficiencies, such as a mobility manager, VPN concentrator, intrusion detection systems system, etc. For a company like Untethered, these appliances can easily add over $200,000 in extra equipment costs.

The first step in WLAN planning and design is to identify user and application requirements and determine how best to satisfy them given existing building characteristics and WLAN capabilities.
In a typical WLAN environment, the number and placement of access points and WLAN controllers will be a function of two primary things, required network performance and desired coverage area.
WLAN performance, like Ethernet, is heavily tied to its ability to support applications.
