Java can be, and has show cases where, it is faster than C/C++ due to dynamic optimization during runtime where the JVM has time to understnad what needs to be optimized and how to do it.

CPlusPlus or just C++ is an extension of ANSI-C (C90, not the latest C99).
CPlusPlus is that other object-oriented superset of C. Unlike ObjC, though, it's static in most ways that I can think of, and adds a ton of things to C--complexity.
However, that CPlusPlus is a significantly more static language, and offers fully manual memory management often means it's generally faster.

Students who have obtained their Sun Certified Programmers for Java technology certification are considered to have met the prerequisites for the course.
Code written in C++ is very short in comparison with other languages, since the use of special characters is preferred before key words, saving effort (and prolonging the life of our keyboards).
The resulting code from a C++ compilation is very efficient, due indeed to its duality as high-level and low-level language and to the reduced size of the language itself.

C++ - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Some other languages, such as Java, accomplish something similar by allowing inheritance of multiple interfaces while restricting the number of base classes to one (interfaces, unlike classes, provide no implementation of function members).
C++ is sometimes compared unfavorably with single-paradigm object-oriented languages such as Java, on the basis that it allows programmers to "mix and match" object-oriented and procedural programming, rather than strictly enforcing a single paradigm.
This is part of a wider debate on the relative merits of the two programming styles.

Although there has been some experimentation with Java as a language for numerically intensive computing, there is a perception by many that the language is unsuited for such work because of performance deficiencies.
Through these optimizations we have been able to achieve with Java at least 80% of the peak Fortran performance on the same benchmarks.
Since all of these optimizations can be automated, we conclude that Java will soon be a serious contender for numerically intensive computing.
