NationMaster - Encyclopedia: List of Linux distributions
General-purpose distributions are organized into sections by the major distribution they are based on, or the package management system (generally, installation format and updating system) they are based around (and thus are, to varying degrees, more compatible and similar).
Linux strictly refers to the Linux kernel, but is commonly used to describe the entire free Unix-like operating system, also known as GNU/Linux, that is formed by combining the Linux kernel with the GNU libraries and tools.
The history of Linux is heavily tied to that of GNU project, a prominent free-software project led by Richard Stallman.

Linux distribution - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Before the first Linux distributions, a would-be Linux user was required to be something of a Unix expert, not only knowing what libraries and executables were needed to successfully get the system to boot and run, but also important details concerning configuration and placement of files in the system.
Distributions are normally segmented into packages, each package holding a specific application or service; examples of packages include a library for handling the PNG image format, a collection of fonts, or a web browser.
Among their proposed standards are the Linux Standard Base, which defines a common ABI and packaging system for Linux, and the Filesystem Hierarchy Standard which recommends a standard filenaming chart, notably the basic directory names found on the root of the tree of any Linux filesystem.

SUSE Linux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The SUSE Linux distribution was originally a German translation of Slackware Linux.
In mid-1992, Softlanding Linux System (SLS) was founded by Peter MacDonald, and was the first comprehensive distribution to contain elements such as X and TCP/IP.
This change in philosophy led to the release of the SUSE Linux 10.0 release on October 6, 2005 in "OSS" (completely open source), "eval" (has both open source and proprietary applications and is actually a fully-featured version) and retail boxed-set editions.

While it is true that the Debian distribution seems to be treated harshly in the table, the phenomenal success of the more up-to-date distributions, such as Mandrake, Red Hat and SuSE seem to indicate that many users quite happily trade in the stability of the distribution for the latest packages.
Linux is developing at such a rapid pace and, while there certainly is a need for a super stable and well-tested distribution, there is also a natural human desire to try all the new stuff as soon as it is available.
Stable *is* a distribution (and it lives up to it's name) but an often overlooked trick to Debian is that you can selectively pull in unstable packages to the stable distribution.

Please note that the Web2c distribution is a bare-bones distribution in source form, and building a complete installation from it is a non-trivial matter.
The principal example of such a distribution is TeX Live (`http://www.tug.org/texlive/'), which is based on the Web2c sources.
Although Web2c has support in the source code for many operating systems, and in fact some of the other distributions are based on it, it's unlikely to work as distributed on anything but Unix.
