World War 1 was started with the assassination of the Duke of Austria, whom was the ingition of the war which took place between Austria and Serbia.
In the early part of the film, Russia and Britain are in the classic "the enemy of my enemy" mode, but in a dramatic scene Royajsland leaves Britain out to dry, freeing up German forces to crush the British.
