This speculation was sparked by the release of a technical demo at the 2005 E3 expo which featured the opening sequence of Final Fantasy VII redone in PS3-level graphics.
It is the story of Aerith during Final Fantasy VII while she is in the Lifestream, after her death at the hands of Sephiroth.

Other titles in the Compilation are Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII (a game on cellular, currently available only in Japan) and Crisis Core-Final Fantasy VII (an action RPG for the PSP, currently scheduled to be released sometime in 2006).
These are Final Fantasy VII: Advent Children (a movie), Before Crisis: Final Fantasy VII (a game on cellular only released in Japan at this point), Final Fantasy VII: Dirge of Cerberus (the game in question here, described in my previous post), and Crisis Core-Final Fantasy VII (an action RPG for the PSP).
