  What is complementary distribution?
Complementary distribution is the mutually exclusive relationship between two phonetically similar segments.
The phones [p] and [pH] are in complementary distribution.
The phones [b] and [B] are in complementary distribution.

Ling 200 | Segmental phonology in OT
We modeled complementary distribution by identifying a basic form of the phoneme (the allophone with the "elsewhere" distribution) and proposing a phonological rule to derive the context-specific allophone.
The distribution of the elsewhere allophone [k] is enforced by a restriction on the lexicon, but the distribution of the specific allophone [c] is enforced by a phonological rule.
A general approach to complementary distribution in OT We can generalize the results of our analysis of Greek to a basic understanding of the kind of constraint ranking that will give rise to a language with complementary distribution between two allophones.

Complementary distribution of phones involves two or more phones, one of which only appear in environments where the other one does not appear.
In this case /s/ and /z/ are considered to be in complementary distribution because one (/s/) occurs at the end of a word after a voiceless consonant, while the other (/z/) occurs at the end of a word after a voiced consonant.
Complementary distribution of morphs involve two or more morphs which only appear in environments where the other one does not appear.

The Dispatch - Serving the Lexington, NC - News   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Complementary distribution in linguistics is the relationship between two different elements, where one element is found in a particular environment and the other element is found in the opposite environment.
For example in English [5] and (engma, written as "ng" in English) are in complementary distribution, since [7] only occurs at the beginning of a syllable and only at the end.
The concept of complementary distribution is applied in the analysis of word forms (morphology).

 Ling 200 | Distribution
Two sounds are in contrastive distribution, also known as overlapping distribution, when they appear in (at least some of) the same environments.
Contextual neutralization is a situation in which two sounds are separate phonemes -- they can be shown to be in contrastive distribution -- but, in a particular environment (context), phoneme #1 has an allophone that is phonetically identical to phoneme #2 (more accurately, to phoneme #2's allophone in that environment).
An example of contextual neutralization would be a language in which /p/ and /b/ are in contrastive distribution in most environments, but /p/ has a [b] allophone when it follows a nasal.

LINGUIST List 10.1778: New: What exactly are allophones?
Since complementary distribution is an abstract regular pattern not solely due to physiological necessity, i'd have to belong to the domain of phonology in my opinion.
In German phonology, when speaking of complementary distribution, the example always adduced is the distribution of the voiceless velar and palatal fricatives; There occurrence depends on the value for the feature [back] of the preceding vowel (i.e.
Now, if you want to 'explain' such distributions on phonetic grounds, the notion of 'coarticulation' is generally unavoidable (as is the case for and as well as for the palatal allophone of German /k/).

 2.3 Heavy tailed distributions
A class of distributions that is often used to capture the characteristics of highly-variable stochastic processes, i.e., more variable than the exponential distribution, is the class of heavy-tailed distributions.
Note that we distinguish between the unbounded possible values of a distribution function and the bounded possible values in a data set by referring to high variability in a data set as long-tailed behavior and in a distribution function as heavy-tailed behavior.
Simulation of heavy-tailed distributions for estimation of steady-state measures is not easy, as the simulation must run exceptionally long in order to capture the effect of the distribution tail, i.e., the rare events, which even with small probability of occurrence can significantly affect the system performance.

Of course, these environments are defined by the properties of the sounds/signs around them, and the distribution of an allophone is the set of the environments where that allophone occurs.
Therefore they are in complementary distribution, and therefore, in part, they are described as allophones of the same phoneme.
When you define the territory of an allophone, you are defining its distribution, the set of places within words in a language where the allophone appears.

To establish the phonemes of a language such MINIMAL PAIRS, two words differing in just one distinguishable sound (hence 'minimal'), must be found for all the phonemes.
Complementary Distribution indicates that two basic sounds are not independent PHONEMES, but conditioned variants of the same phoneme, of the same minimally distinctive sound.
Sounds are in complementary distribution when one occurs under condition A but never B, while the other occurs under condition B but never A. That is, the allophonic variation is predictable from the environment.

Every data point (outdegree value) is assigned two coordinates: x, the Weibul distribution value at that argument; and y, the value of the ccdf of outdegree frequencies in the graph.
First, as shown by Gumbel [1958], Weibull arises as a distribution for munimum of many independent identically distributed variables, provided that their common cdf is continuous.
Discrete Weibull distribution can also result from growth process in which each member of a population starts from a small size and grows to some limiting size k where its growth stops.

Again, if there is a complementary distribution with respect to what can occur to the right of these two sounds, then they are likely to be allophones of a single phoneme, related by a rule.
If you have two sounds that are in complementary distribution, and if they are phonetically similar (as is the case for most of the homework examples), then they are likely to be allophones of a single phoneme.
In most of the homework examples, the sounds in complementary distribution are phonetically similar (and thus these are allophones of a single phoneme).

Since there are no minimal pairs where [i] and [i̥] are the only different sounds between the pair, and none where [u] and [u̥] are the only different sounds, we proceed to look for complementary distribution.
If these allophones are in complementary distribution, the environment that precedes them does not appear to be the conditioning environment.
Before we give up the hypothesis that these pairs of sounds are in complementary distribution, we must examine another possibility: that the environment that surrounds the sounds in question is the conditioning environment.

Two speech sounds in a language will either be in overlapping distribution or complementary distribution with respect to one another.
Overlapping distribution occurs when the sets of phonetic environments in which the sounds occur are partially or completely identical.
Most sounds that are in overlapping distribution are contrastive with respect to one another, which is another way of saying they are distinctive sounds.

The core issue, however, is the redundancy of as a digraph, and its not having a complementary distribution.
His disagreement on the basis of redundancy and complementary distribution indicates a disagreement that is not based on religious affiliation, and that is also not based "tumbolisation." For this reason, it might well help one to understand better if one examines the two concepts in their original sense and usage.
In spite of this clarification, one is still faced with the fact that complementary distribution in PHONOLOGY is always related to allophones of a definite phoneme.
