Principles of Economics by Carl Menger
The reason for this is that the goods complementary to the crops standing on the fields (the labor services necessary for harvesting them) are missing, with the result that the crops themselves lose their goods-character.
Goods of higher order acquire and maintain their goods-character, therefore, not with respect to needs of the immediate present, but as a result of human foresight, only with respect to needs that will be experienced when the process of production has been completed.
Goods of higher order are transformed, in accordance with the laws of causality, into goods of the next lower order; these are further transformed until they become goods of first order, and finally bring about the state we call satisfaction of human needs.

Chapter 3. The Theory of Value
Goods that satisfy human needs in an identical fashion are for this very reason regarded as completely homogeneous from an economic point of view, even though they may belong to different types or kinds on the basis of external appearance.
Thus equal quantities of goods having different qualities of the first kind will display values that are unequal in the proportion indicated...Merely reducing these goods to quantities of equal economic effectiveness (a procedure actually employed in the economic activities of men in all such cases) thus completely removes the difficulty in determining the value.
Although their complementary factor of production is now missing, they can still be applied to the production of other goods of lower order, and thus directed to the satisfaction of human needs, even if these needs are, perhaps, somewhat less important than would otherwise have been the case.

 Basic Concepts of Economic Value
The economic value of a particular item, or good, for example a loaf of bread, is measured by the maximum amount of other things that a person is willing to give up to have that loaf of bread.
If we simplify our example “economy” so that the person only has two goods to choose from, bread and pasta, the value of a loaf of bread would be measured by the most pasta that the person is willing to give up to have one more loaf of bread.
Similarly, if the price of a complementary good, one that is purchased in conjunction with the good in question, changes, the economic benefit from the good will change in the opposite direction.

"Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) is a broad domain of healing resources that encompasses all health systems, modalities, and practices and their accompanying theories and beliefs, other than those intrinsic to the politically dominant health system of a particular society or culture in a given historical period.
Efficient regulation of the "less invasive" complementary therapies such as massage or relaxation therapies is equally important.

Back Pain > Complementary Therapy The Route To Better Back Health
Complementary therapy is concerned with health and wellness from a mind, body and spirit approach.  As a past sufferer of back pain resulting from injury and a congenital disorder, I understand how challenging it can be to live with back pain.
The GOOD news is you don't have to.  Studies actually suggest that most chronic back pain can be relieved in just six short weeks.
This is usually the most popular complementary therapy sought out by back pain sufferers.  Chiropractic treatment involves the use of spinal manipulation to relieve acute and chronic back pain.  There is a large body of research that supports the efficacy of chiropractic therapy in conjunction with a strengthening program.

People use complementary therapies and complementary medicines in addition to, or instead of, conventional medicines regardless of pharmacists' views on these approaches and whether or not pharmacies sell such products.
Accepting that patients may be using complementary medicines and therapies does not necessarily mean that pharmacists are endorsing such approaches, but if pharmacists are not aware of, or choose to ignore, patients' use of complementary medicines and therapies, it may in part compromise pharmacists' ability to provide pharmaceutical care.
In my view, it would be a credit to our profession to accept that patients use complementary medicines, to encourage them to disclose such use to a pharmacist without fear of being judged, and to consult a pharmacist for advice on choosing good-quality products and for objective, reliable information on their use.
