Composite materials (or composites for short) are engineered materials made from two or more constituent materials with significantly different physical or chemical properties and which remain separate and distinct within the finished structure.
The most primitive composite materials comprised straw and mud in the form of bricks for building construction; the Biblical book of Exodus speaks of the Israelites being oppressed by Pharaoh, by being forced to make bricks without straw.
Composite materials can be divided into two main categories normally referred to as short fiber reinforced materials and continuous fiber reinforced materials.

Some composites use an aggregate instead of, or in addition to, fibers.
In terms of stress, any fibers serve to resist tension, the matrix serves to resist shear, and all materials present serve to resist compression, including any aggregate.
Composite materials can be divided into two main categories normally referred to as short fiber reinforced materials and continous fiber reinforced materials.

New Composite Material Does The Dirty On Physics
"Composite materials like this are built on a totally new concept," said the two co-leaders of the UCSD team, Sheldon Schultz and David R. Smith, who announced their discovery at a news conference.
He notes that the development of this new class of materials, which was financed by the National Science Foundation and the Department of Energy, is entirely consistent with the laws of physics and was predicted as a possibility in 1968 by a Russian theorist, V.G. Veselago.
Underlying the reversal of the Doppler effect, Snell's law, and Cerenkov radiation (radiation by charged particles moving through a medium) is that this new material exhibits a reversal of one of the "right-hand rules" of physics which describe a relationship between the electric and magnetic fields and the direction of their wave velocity.

 Composite Structures
A composite material is basically a combination of two or more materials, each of which retains it own distinctive properties.
Multiphase metals are composite materials on a micro scale, but generally the term composite is applied to materials that are created by mechanically bonding two or more different materials together.
Most commonly, composite materials have a bulk phase, which is continuous, called the matrix; and a dispersed, non-continuous, phase called the reinforcement.

Composite materials are usually manmade and created to obtain properties that cannot be achieved by any of the components acting alone.
Typically, the y-axis is the axis in the plane of the laminate perpendicular to the x-axis, and the z-axis is the reference axis normal to the laminate plane in the composite laminate.

 Composites
Composites: materials, usually man-made, that are a three-dimensional combination of at least two chemically distinct materials, with a distinct interface separating the components, created to obtain properties that cannot be achieved by any of the components acting alone.
Composites are combinations of two materials in which one of the materials, called the reinforcing phase, is in the form of fibers, sheets, or particles, and is embedded in the other materials called the matrix phase.
If the composite is designed and fabricated correctly, it combines the strength of the reinforcement with the toughness of the matrix to achieve a combination of desirable properties not available in any single conventional material.

A typical composite material is a system of materials composing of two or more materials (mixed and bonded) on a macroscopic scale.
If the composition occurs on a microscopic scale (molecular level), the new material is then called an alloy for metals or a polymer for plastics.
Generally, a composite material is composed of reinforcement (fibers, particles, flakes, and/or fillers) embedded in a matrix (polymers, metals, or seramics).

A composite material is a material in which two or more distinct materials are combined together but remain uniquely indentifiable in the mixture.
If the composite material is to stay in equilibrium then the force we apply to the composite as a whole, F, must be balanced by an equal and opposite force in the fibre, F
So the stress in the composite is just the sum of the stresses in the fibre and the matrix multiplied by their relative cross-sectional areas.
