Composite monitor - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A "Composite Monitor" is a special kind of monitor (actually it is the most common in the pre-2000 era) that accepts a "composite video signal" which is a technical term for a video signal that has been "composited" together to flow through a single cable - as opposed to using multiple cables.
Composite and S-video are used in PAL and NTSC regions.
Note that all composite monitors imply the use of a "CRT" for display, and for color signals anyway, the "composite signal" must be "decoded" into its three components of red, green and blue to be fed to each "gun" of the CRT.

Television - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Although his system was never built, the cathode ray tube did come to be used to display images in almost all television sets and computer monitors until the invention of the LCD panel.
A fully electronic system was first achieved by Philo Taylor Farnsworth on September 7, 1927, although the low-resolution, light-insensitive camera tube limited the image to a plate of glass painted fl, with a straight line etched across it, rotated in front of a bright carbon arc lamp.

If the monitor exhibits major flickering, periodic collapse of the display to a line, etc., then it may help to know that a common source of such problems is one or more bad connections where the High Voltage module is joined to the main circuit board.
A composite video monitor is a display which requires a composite video signal such as that output by an Apple II computer.
When a composite monitor is known to be okay, a fuzzy/dim display usually indicates that the video output level is too low.

Tektronix MBD: Products > Component/Composite Waveform Monitor WFM300A : Intro
In addition, composite (NTSC or PAL) waveforms existing in the facility may be monitored with the WFM300A and composite vectors displayed on a companion 1720 Series composite vectorscope.
Two separate picture monitor outputs are provided, one for the composite PAL or NTSC input signal and one GBR set for the component input signal.
The valid GBR gamut limit is monitored to ensure the operator is warned if a combination of signals will not be valid when later encoded into PAL or NTSC composite format.

 VGA to workstation monitor FAQ
Some monitors (like original IBM VGA monitor) use different sync polarities in different screen modes to be able to use the right screen settings for that monitor (the electronics has adjustments for different screen modes).
The monitors which use 15625 Hz or 15750 Hz horizonal sync rate are very similar to normal television are designed for viewing normal interlaced TV standard video at 50 or 60 Hz field rate.
Nowadays the monocrome monitors are practically not used in modern PC systems, so the support for those does not work todays as well as it used to be (VGA card might not support the moncrome monitor detection well ot the software overrides the monocrome settings).

A composite monitor or TV will give you approximately 480-490 lines vertically but 10 to 15 percent of these may be hidden by the CRT bezel due to overscan.
Going to composite video or RF is more complicated as there are three composite video standard NTSC, PAL and SECAM in use in the world and there are also some small differences in modifications of those used in different countries) which is the reason why there are not much of this kind of project.
Composite video is used for the luminance (intensity) with the color information modulated on a subcarrier (which is ignored by a B/W TV).

VGA to fixed frequency monitor (3, 4, or 5 BNC connectors): ---------------------------------------------------------- Questions about this specific problem are among the most common as low cost fixed frequency monitors become available when their workstation hosts are decommissioned due to the march of progress.
Or, it may work but not be advertised where the monitor is to be connected to a PC (i.e., why manufacture more than one version of the monitor circuitry if you don't have to?).
Unless the adapter cable provides them, the monitor sense lines will not be present (at least not automatically), so you may have to tell the Sparc the resolution explicitly.

 Notes on Video Conversion
A color composite monitor may be somewhat better than a good TV but it is still limited by the NTSC standard - mainly horizontal resolution but color rendition as well.
However, some CGA monitors have internal NTSC composite inputs and in that case, it is simply a matter of flipping the appropriate switch.
Composite is better than using an RF modulator and feeding the signal into the TV tuner but is otherwise the worst of them all.

The Commodore SX-64, also known as the Executive 64, was a portable, briefcase/suitcase-size "luggable" version of the popular Commodore 64 home computer and holds the distinction of being the first full-color portable computer.
The SX-64 featured a built-in five-inch composite monitor and a built-in 1541 floppy drive, and weighed 23 lbs (10.5 kg).
In addition, the cassette port and RF port were omitted from the SX-64 because it had a built-in disk drive and monitor, and thus no need for a tape drive or television connector.
