Composite video - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Composite video is the format of an analog television (picture only) signal before it is combined with a sound signal and modulated onto an RF carrier.
Composite video is often designated by the CVBS acronym, meaning either "Color, Video, Blank and Sync", "Composite Video Baseband Signal", "Composite Video Burst Signal", or "Composite Video with Burst and Sync".
It is commonly believed that composite video is a retronym coined after the introduction of S-video.

Composite video is the format of an analog television signal before it is modulated onto an RF carrier.
Composite video can easily be directed to any broadcast channel simply by mixing it with the proper RF carrier frequency.
In the United States, the composite video signal is typically connected using an RCA jack, normally yellow (with red and white for left and right sound).

Method and apparatus utilizing look-up tables for color graphics in the digital composite video domain - Patent 5402181
Composite systems represent the image using a single data stream, usually 8 bits wide, which is formed by passing the NTSC composite video signal through a single analog-to-digital converter without any prior decoding.
In the NTSC video signal, color is presented by a 3.58 MHz amplitude and phase modulated subcarrier which is mixed with the luminance, or fl and white portion of the image.
The video signal is also fed via 48 to the sync stripper 53 which separates the vertical and horizontal sync pulses (VS and HS, respectively) from the video signal as well as an even/odd field signal 54 which is fed to the field counter 57 via 54.

Digitization of video signals - Patent 4825286
The sum signal is sampled and digitized at a sampling frequency which is at least twice the audio carrier frequency and is more than three times the frequency of a color subcarrier in the composite video signal, and is not related thereto.
This invention relates to the digitization of video signals, and in particular is concerned with the conversion into digital form of composite video television signals in a manner which is particularly convenient for transmission via a transmission network, which may in particular comprise an optical fiber transmission path.
Applied to a television signal, the analog video signal may be constituted by a composite video signal and the second signal may be a carrier signal frequency modulated with an audio signal.

Video Signal Measurement and Generation Fundamentals - Tutorial - Development Library - National Instruments
A composite video signal is a signal in which all the components required to generate a video signal are embedded in a single signal.
The composite color video signal, often called the Color Video, Blank, and Sync (CVBS) signal, is the sum of Y and C, is shown in Figure 3.
The analog composite video signal is defined as a voltage source with an output impedance of 75 Ω.

 Video Engineering Primer
To see the various elements of the composite video signal two special test oscilloscopes are used - the waveform monitor and the vectorscope.
Signals that are outside of this range lose all detail so that if a light colored face is at or above 100 units, it will be washed out.
If, however, you are not changing the video signal because you are working with a basic editing system without any additional equipment, then except for degadations caused by generation loss, the colors and luminance of your edited tape should be the same as your source tape.

The composite video signal was designed primarily for broadcast television and not ideally suited for industrial and higher performance applications.
A primary problem with composite video is that it suffers from a phenomenon called "cross color".

The data status signal is applied to the vertical timing unit for synchronizing the vertical timing signal with the vertical synchronizing component of the composite video signal and rendering the vertical timing signal substantially immune to noise which might accompany the composite video signal.
signal recovery means for providing a composite video output signal having recurring horizontal timing components and recurring vertical timing components and in which a data word is present during a horizontal line of the vertical interval thereof;

Tomi Engdahl's Video Signal Standards and Conversion Page
Composite video signal is the most often used video signal format in TV broadcasting industry and it is used anywhere from TV camesras to TV broadcasts upto consumer video equipment interconnections.
Composite video signal is most often transported using one 75 ohm coaxial cable terminated with RCA or BNC connectors so that center pin carries the signal and the outer shield of the connector is signal ground.
Generally telecined PAL signal does not cause problems in computer processing, but is some cases where one field of video is shifted by a frame, you get a video signal which looks okay on an interlaced display (television), but it produces interlacing artifacts on a computer monitor and when video is digitized.

If your video signal source (for example PC video card TV output) puts out NTSC video but your TV is designed to handle only PAL standard you get usually fl and white image, and with some devices video signal does not sync at all.
