compubox   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Compubox is used in boxing matches across the world.
Compubox's aim is to settle controversies surrounding fights by counting each punch thrown by each of the fighters, and also each punch landed, to provide fight viewers with a final punchstat count and a perception of who should ideally be given the judges' decision, in the cases where a fight lasts the full distance.
Compubox also showed Lennox Lewis outlanding Evander Holyfield by a large margin during their first fight, declared a draw or tie.

SOHH.com Global Forum - People have become way too obsessed with Compubox punchstats   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-22)
Compubox is a way to look at things, but you have to take it with a grain of salt.
Compubox can also be misleading because of grazing punches that still land, and solid clean punches.
Compubox numbers mean nothing because the judges do not take that into effect and just because you throw more shots doesn't mean you are hurting you opponent.

 Boxing News - 24/7 Coverage - The #1 boxing web site - Pound-4-Pound
Compubox has its limitations, but its drawbacks are as hurtful to the sport as misguided fans who interpret raw punching numbers as an indication of how a decision should go.
Since Compubox was introduced back in 1985, the fighter landing the greater number of punches wins 90 percent of the time.
The only way that Compubox could improve is to be able to count the number of punches and one day count the force of the punches, but that is a technology not yet invented or introduced.

Canobbio and CompuBox co-founder Logan Hobson couldn't have asked for a better showcase, because the fight featured bristling action, a charged-up crowd and a controversial decision of a nature that helped emphasize the new technology's best attributes.
CompuBox signed long-term contracts with HBO and ESPN, and as a result, the assignments eventually became too numerous for the co-founders to handle themselves.
CompuBox has borne witness to tragedies such as the deaths of Beethavean Scottland and Bobby Tomasello and absurd moments like James Butler's post-fight sucker punch of Richard Grant.

Is It The Judges That Create Controversial Decisions… Or Is It The CompuBox?
We have seen fights in the Olympics (where there should be the best judges) where one judge has counted over 30 punches as landed whereas another judge has seen just 8 clean punches landed in the same fight.
Yet in scoring standards it says that clean punching (which includes both that the punch lands clean and it is effective) is the thing that counts.
CompuBox statistics are interesting of course and they can give you a good indication of how the fight processes but you can not score bouts according to them.

I will add that many critics are right that Compubox is imperfect since it is dependent upon humans to count punches, not a easy endeavor and of course, it does not show how hard a punch is.
But as Larry Merchant observed, Compubox usually tells the story correctly 9 out of 10 times and there are some benefits.
Compubox reinforces what we saw in the fight, that De La Hoya slowed down and Sturm fought a steady fight from round to round.

CompuBox punch statistics, while not designed to compete with the judges to determine a winner, have added such texture and a fresh perspective to the sport since their inception in the mid-1980s.
Punch statistics are the brainchild of Canobbio and Logan Hobson, the former a onetime researcher for Sports Illustrated and the latter an ex-sports writer for United Press International.
As it is, CompuBox has changed for the better the way boxing is viewed with its simple, yet clever system.

The CompuBox system is imperfect in that the distinction between "jabs" and "power punches" is often irrelevant.

The LA Times’s Bill Plaschke says that Mosley won because he drew blood, but that blood came from an unintentional head-butt, so if any judge took sanguescence into account in his or her scoring, that was simply an act of incompetence.
