Jengel and Fatro's Rail Gun Page: Powering a Rail Gun
In addition, a conduction shell is mounted in the air gap between the stator and rotor, with a compensating coil mounted to it.
The switching system allows the AC voltage signal generated in the rotor to be tapped and directed into the load (rails and projectile) at the desired time and thus desired voltage initiating a current pulse and then disconnecting the load from the rotor circuit stopping the pulse.
The main difference between a compulsator and an alternator or generator is that the compulsator has an impedance compensation winding(s) that decreases the rise time of output pulses.

Compulsator - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The compulsator is used like a capacitor, to gather energy from a low-power source and store it, then generate a high-power output for a short period.
Therefore, compulsators tend to have very light rotors that spin very fast in order to store the most energy in the available mass, and because too much mass in the rotor causes problems with the magnitude of centripetal force required to prevent the rotor from flying apart.
The compulsator would be used to power a railgun, and potentially other pulsed energy weapons (particularly electronic warfare systems); also, the compulsator could be used in non-pulsed mode to drive the tank with electric motors for limited periods as a kind of "quiet mode", which could be useful in urban combat.

The principle is very similar to an except that the rotor is usually kept due to inertia (having been "spun up" by an motor or the compulsator itself having been in reverse as an AC motor) and small matter of the "compensation".

Compulsive   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
Compulsive hoarding (or pathological hoarding) is a term which is used to describe extreme hoarding behaviour in humans.
It involves the collection or failure to discard large numbers of objects even when their storage causes significant clutter and impairment to basic living activities such as moving around the house, cooking, cleaning or sleeping.
In addition to hoarding, she reported several other obsessive-compulsive symptoms, such as fear of hurting others due to carelessness, an over-concern with dirt and germs, a need for symmetry and a need to know or remember things.

Compulsator 10 uniquely comprises a high power electric storage device and signal shape generator suitable for transmitting energy to baseplate mass 16, reaction mass 17, and selected or target mass 18.
Compulsator 10 can comprise an electric generator having one or more phases which produce an alternating current, and this current is transmitted over the period represented by the discharge of energy from compulsator 10.
Compulsator 10 has sufficient power to drive multiple transducers 12 simultaneously to distribute the generated forces over the entirety of baseplate 16 in contact with soil or water or other mass 18.

The third, and most advanced method is a device known as a compensated pulsed alternator or compulsator, which was developed in the eighties at the University of Texas(UT) Center for Electromechanics.
UT built a compulsator for one of their railguns, which is capable of generating approximately 50,000 Amperes of current.
The homopole generator and the compulsator require means far out of reach of any high school physics student, and most college students, so for our power source we shall use capacitors.

Reinforced composite flywheels and shafts - Patent 5285699
In particular, when the armature winding 302 becomes aligned with the shorted compensating winding 305, a high voltage pulse is generated that is proportional to the current through the armature winding 302 and the maximum rate of change of the inductance of the armature winding 302 as the rotor 301 is rotated.
The air-core compulsator 300 is self-excited by a rectifier bridge circuit 306 interconnecting the excitation winding 303 to the field winding 304.
Further details regarding electrical and structural characteristics of a compulsator including a rotor similar to rotor 401 are disclosed in J. Kitzmiller et al., "Design of a 660 MW pulsed air-core Compulsator," 1990 International Conference on Electric Machines, MIT, Cambridge, Mass., Aug. 13-15, 1990, incorporated herein by reference.

of compulsive hoarding: :The client, D, lived with her two children, aged 11 and 14, and described her current hoarding behaviour as a 'small problem that mushroomed' many years ago, along with corresponding marital difficulties.
D also suffered from a handwashing compulsion and engaged in lengthy cleaning rituals of household items.
The volume of cluttered possessions took up approximately 70 per cent of the living space in her house.

Compulsators are particularly well-suited for short, high power pulses because compulsators have pulsewidth limitations.
The compulsator is a specialized alternator which has been designed to produce a series of high-power pulses.
The compulsator produces an alternating voltage which drives the current pulse through a current zero, achieving the desired pulsewidth.

 Cycle-portion encoder - Patent 4905004
The rail gun is powered from a compensated pulsed alternator (compulsator), which incorporates a horizontal shaft, six pole rotating field.
Since the compulsator slows at each discharge, the cycle-portion encoder must accommodate changes in firing angle with each shot.
Using IC-2 sensed voltage as input reference signal, the f.sub.1 pulse is initiated by the positive-going zero-crossing of the IC-2 signal, which coincides with the armature open-circuit voltage peak.

 Compulsator
The kinetic energy of a rotating object depends on the mass of the object, and the square of the speed of rotation.
One possibility being considered is to build an electric tank that uses a conventional diesel engine for day to day driving and to charge a compulsator.

Re: Compulsators 6 million amps of raw power!!!   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-16)
The discharge of a compulsator into a rail gun is slow by comparison to the discharge of the cap into the primary of a typical tesla coil.
If you could make a secondary with a resonance of 1KHz or less a compulsator might work ok. A spark gap would cause a large amount of power to be lost in a low voltage high current circuit.
A semiconductor switch would be nice but insanely expensive since the die area to carry 6MA would be enourmous.

 Welcome to Rollette.COM
There is not alot out there on the web for someone doing research on compulsators.
My hope is to someday build one to power my railgun, However I still need to do more research on this.
On these pages there is an images button (this only seems to work with IE not firefox) these might help you.
