Computer Space - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Computer Space is a computer arcade game released in 1971 by Nutting Associates.
Computer Space was innovative for establishing the basic form of all arcade games to come - that of a dedicated computing device built to play only that one game.
Computer Space appeared in the 1973 science fiction films Soylent Green and Sleeper and the 1975 film Jaws.

Computer Space- The First Arcade Video Game in 1971
The game was rather simple in design compared to later arcade games, as the display was nothing more than a 13" GE Television housed in a fiberglass cabinet with a single external board for the game electronics and a paint can as the receptacle for quarters fed into the machine.
The designer of Computer Space was Nolan Bushnell who released the better known PONG arcade game the following year.
The picture above is from the CED movie Soylent Green which showed the Computer Space cabinet in several scenes, including a close-up of the game play 08:27 into Side 1 of the disc.

Computer Centers - Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
The plan of a center that is to be used for individual study with computers should be quite different than that of a room whose primary purpose is demonstrations, or one whose purpose is small group work.
In general, you can get more computers into your space if you are intending the space to be used only for individual study, because there is no need for an arrangement of desks that allows for or encourages discussion among users, and there is no need for a clear line of site to a teacher.
While planning a space for group work, try to calculate the maximum number of users who might be clustered around a monitor for the purpose of group work and plan for sufficient floor space to accommodate them relatively comfortably.

"The space of the computer is shaped by the objects that occupy it." A computer programmer will typically form the space of the computer by filling it with the symbolic elements of a programming language and then by connecting these elements as the program requires.

Space War(sp?) by Atari for the 2600 is a decent port, but I'd say it flickers something nasty and is hard to control.
I think one of the reasons Computer Space did poorly was the name: Computers in the 1970s were rare and big machines, and something this small and complicated scared people back then.
Computer Space was based loosely on the spacewar computer game, but obviously is quite a bit different.

Allegories of Space   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Games are usually the first type of computer application to take advantage of the newest and fastest computer hardware, and the step up from 32-bit to 64-bit processing was introduced to the masses by way of cheap video game consoles such as the Nintendo64, years before it was available on the standard desktop PCs.
Computer games are essentially concerned with spatial representation and negotiation, and therefore a classification of computer games can be based on how they represent &emdash; or, perhaps, implement &emdash; space.
Computer games, finally, are allegories of space: they pretend to portray space in ever more realistic ways, but rely on their deviation from reality in order to make the illusion playable.

Spaceflight Now | STS-100 Mission Report | Serious computer problem strikes space station
Photo: Spaceflight Now/NASA TV The international space station's three main control computers were crippled today by a subtle and so-far-baffling software glitch that disrupted normal operations, forced the crew to delay critical robot arm tests and triggered a massive troubleshooting effort in Houston.
But flight controllers are not receiving telemetry from the command and control computers, they have no insight into what might have knocked them out of action or what might be required to correct the problem.
If the computer glitch is corrected overnight, the arm will be put through its paces Thursday, handing a 3,000-pound cargo pallet back to the shuttle robot arm for reberthing in Endeavour's cargo bay.
