Intel 8008 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The 8008, originally codenamed 1201, was originally commissioned by Computer Terminal Corporation for use in its Datapoint 2200 programmable terminal, but because the chip was delivered late and did not meet CTC's performance goals, the chip was not used in the 2200.
For controller and CRT terminal use this was an acceptable design, but it was too difficult to use for most other tasks.
A few early computer designs were based on it, but most would use the later and greatly improved Intel 8080 instead.

Datapoint - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Datapoint Corporation, originally known as Computer Terminal Corporation (CTC), was a computer company based in San Antonio, Texas.
CTC is credited by some historians with accidentally inventing the personal computer.
The Datapoint 2201 became so popular that CTC later changed its name to Datapoint Corp. Other Datapoint inventions were ARCnet, invented in 1977, which was an early token-passing local area network (LAN) protocol, and the PL/B high-level programming language, which was originally called Databus (from Datapoint business language) and ran under the Datashare multi-user interpreter.

Since it would be used by office workers rather than engineers, CTC wanted to make it less intimidating by disguising the fact that it was a computer terminal.
A later upgrade, the 8080, formed the heart of the Altair and IMSAI computers of the mid-1970s; a further modification, the 8088, was used in the first IBM PC.
CTC became Datapoint Corporation in 1972 and pioneered office automation, inventing the local area network in 1977.

 The 8008 & The 8080
Computer Terminal Corporation (later known as Datapoint) had visited Intel in late 1969 to contract Intel to design and build a custom bipolar memory chip for their small CPU, which was to be built using TTL logic components (as was customary in those days).
The architecture of this 8-bit microprocessor was done by CTC, and — like all simple CPU’s - was very similar to the 4004 architecture.
Intel entered into a development contract with CTC in early 1970 and Hal Feeney was assigned to work on the chip.

Computer History Museum - Apple Computer, Inc. - The Apple IIe Personal Computer System
After selling 200 or so of the computer, Jobs attracted the attention of some investors, co-founding Apple Computer with Wozniak, and introducing the Apple II computer in 1977.
It was the engineering skill of Wozniak (known affectionately as “Woz”) the marketing ability of Jobs, and the hard work of many of the early employees that contributed to Apple’s early success.
Apple was the first company to mass market the graphical user interface in their Macintosh computer, introduced in 1984, a product that re-defined personal computing.

EARLY HISTORY OF THE PERSONAL COMPUTER
By the early 1970s there was a vast number of people who had had some experience with mainframe computers and would love to have a computer of their own.
Ed Roberts decided to call his computer the Altair after the name of a planet in a StarTrek episode Les Solomon's daughter was watching.
Disk drives had long been used with mainframe computers but they were too expensive for the low cost home computers the industry was trying to develop.

teletype was the first computer terminal
This was the origin of the command line interface, i.e., the text-only mode of communicating with a computer.
The punched tape capabilities of the teletypewriters were often used to capture computer output and for the off-line preparation of input.
In computing, especially in Unix-like operating systems, the legacy of teletypewriters lives on in the designations for serial ports and consoles (i.e., the text-only display mode), which have the prefix tty, such as /dev/tty5 for the fifth virtual console.

In fact the 8008 was designed for a company called Computer Terminal Corporation, who wanted to build a universal terminal around it.
Intel failed to meat the deadline so Computer Terminal Corporation cancelled the order and built the Datapoint 2200 terminal using about 100 TTL ICs as CPU.
Later Computer Terminal Corporation was renamed to Datapoint Corporation.

The Anger of Compassion: Great Moments in Microprocessor History
Its primary claim to fame is that its ISA -- provided by Computer Terminal Corporation (CTC), who had commissioned the chip -- was to form the basis for the 8080, as well as for the later 8086 (and hence the x86) architecture.
It was used in the Altair 8800, one of the first renowned personal computers (other claimants to that title include the 1963 MIT Lincoln Labs' 12-bit LINC/Laboratory Instruments Computer built with DEC components and DEC's own 1965 PDP-8).
Although the 4004 had been the company's first, it was really the 8080 that clinched its future -- this was immediately apparent, and in fact in 1974 the company changed its phone number so that the last four digits would be 8080.
