Computer and video game industry - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The computer and video game industry (formally referred to as interactive entertainment and generally as the games industry) is the economic sector involved with the development, marketing and sale of video and computer games.
As the video game industry took off in the mid-80s, many developers faced the more distressing problem of working with fly-by-night or unscrupulous publishers that would either fold unexpectedly or run off with the game profits.
Video game arcades are still relatively popular in Japan; for every arcade game released in the US, nine are released in Japan.

In order to achieve an accurate sample, the database entries are representative of close to 500 game titles, about 20 computer and video game platforms, over and 150 publishers (see Fields section for more information).

Computer games under sociological microscope in Cantor exhibit
The exhibit is derived from research conducted in a Stanford Humanities Laboratory project by Lowood and other scholars, which proposes that computer games and simulations are the emerging narrative form and communication medium of the early 21st century.
The exhibit traces the history of computer and video games through a collection of artifacts, many from the media collection that Lowood is assembling in the library.
Computer games, once seen as commercial products or a one-way communication between designer and player, are now seen as a much more open kind of medium that people can contribute to in other ways, he said.

How a simple, text-based game (based on a nearly 20 year old DOS game) that is downloaded over the Internet, played on Palm Pilots, and features no graphical imagery is contributing to the very real issues of violence is questionable.
What's missing from contemporary debate on gaming and culture is any naturalistic study of what game-playing experiences are like, how gaming fits into people's lives, and the kinds of practices people are engaged in while gaming.
The challenges of using games in educational contexts highlight many of the problems with arguments made by game critics who posit that games with violent imagery are "teaching" our kids to become aggressive or increasingly violent (See Grossman, 2000; Provenzo, 1991).
