Firewalls are systems which help protect computers and computer networks from attack and subsequent intrusion by restricting the network traffic which can pass through them, based on a set of system administrator defined rules.
Computer security is a highly complex field, and it is relatively immature, except on certain very secure systems that never make it into the news media because nothing ever goes wrong that can be publicized, and for which there is not much literature because the security details are proprietary.

Because computer systems are very complex, and cannot be guaranteed to be free of defects, this security stance tends to produce insecure systems.
Malicious individuals have regularly penetrated well-designed, secure computer systems by taking advantage of the carelessness of trusted individuals, or by deliberately deceiving them, for example sending messages that they are the system admin and asking for passwords.
In practice, only a small fraction of computer program code is mathematically proven, or even goes through extensive security audits, so it's usually possible for a determined cracker to read, copy, alter or destroy data in well secured computers.

Computer security is the effort to create a secure computing platform, designed so that agents (users or programs) can only perform actions that have been allowed.
There should be an outline level security section geared for small computing user with a checklist of items to tick off in order to harden their environment and protect privacy: Operating system security releases, software security releases, hardware or software firewall, antivirus software, alternative software (FireFox instead of IE), maybe even anti-spyware software.
I've removed all the computer insecurity stuff into its own article computer insecurity, and I now propose that the security (computers) stuff should be merged into the remaining Computer security article.

The original computers were the size of a large room, and such enormous computing facilities still exist for specialised scientific computation - supercomputers - and for the transaction processing requirements of large companies, generally called mainframes.
Smaller computers for individual use, called personal computers, are perhaps the form most people are most familiar with, and their portable equivalent the notebook computer.
However, the most common form of computer in use today is the embedded computer, a (usually) small computer used to control another device.

In the case of a computer system sequestered in a vault without any means of power or communication, the term 'secure' is applied in a pejorative sense only.
Unfortunately, a computer industry group led by Microsoft, in an attempt to market a different set of products and services, has taken the term "trusted system" and changed it a bit to include making comuter hardware that prevents the user from having full control over the system they own.

Except for difficulty in removing spyware most malware incidents mean a few days of hell for the computer owner and users, followed by living without that which could not be removed, and perhaps buying software whose proof of purchase was stored on the computer whose data has now been lost in the recovery process.
So for each victim of computer damage, the individual cost can run from a few hundred dollars to a few thousand, and several days of their time.

Issues in S and T, Summer 2003, Computer Insecurity
In spite of repeated examples of the vulnerability of almost all computer systems to invasion and manipulation, very few people recognize the magnitude of the damage that can be done and even fewer have taken adequate steps to fix the problem.
Because so many computer users and system administrators are not sufficiently aware of the vulnerabilities of their systems, they are not demanding more secure systems from vendors.
We need an information campaign to make computer users and system administrators more aware of how vulnerable their systems are to attack so that they will be motivated to employ defensive techniques.

BBC NEWS | Technology | Taking computer insecurity seriously
For while we shouldn't exempt the computing industry from its share of blame, it is clear that everyone with an Internet-connected computer has a general responsibility to the network as a whole.
When a computer tries to connect to a protected network, it first has to verify that it complies with that network's security standards.
If the computer doesn't conform then it is only able to connect to a single server, one which provides the patches and security software it needs.

It seems to me that there is an epidemic raging in the States right now around so-called Computer Crime, but it is not being perpetrated by these criminals, it is being perpetrated by over-reactive administrative bodies who believe that computer trespass is somehow criminally on par with bank robbery, car jacking, and murder.

 The Net Growth In Insecurity
The proliferation of networking has aided computer insecurity in many ways: by presenting additional vulnerable resources (such as the network itself, and millions of computers) and by connecting many more people together (more disinformation, more social engineering, more electronic mail, more communication scenarios in general).
Computer networks play a role in essentially every attack today, and numerous attacks focus on the networks themselves, rather than simply using them as a communication channel.

The United States continues to face serious challenges in protecting computer systems and communications from unauthorized use and manipulation.
In terms of computer security, the situation is worse than ever, correlated with the nation's dramatically increased dependence on computers, the widespread growth of the Internet, the steady creation of popular applications, and our heightened dependence on the integrity of others.
There is a seemingly endless stream of old and new security flaws, coupled with markedly increased security threats and risks, such as viruses, Trojan horses, penetrations, insider misuse, identity theft, and fraud.
