	Population Computer Models
		These models are the basis for the program or computer model that you'll be using in the last sections of the lesson.
		Models are also basic tools used by Population Ecologists in the study and analysis of populations.
		A computer model can display the results graphically as it does the calculations, and it can also take the input through a nice user interface (by pointing and clicking with the mouse).

		This type of model predicts changes in sea-surface temperatures and sea ice by treating the ocean as though it were a layer of water of constant depth (typically 50 metres), heat transports within the ocean being specified and remaining constant while climate changes.
		This kind of model is useful for simulating what the climate would be like for some fixed level of carbon dioxide, but it cannot be used for predicting the rate of change of climate because this is largely determined by processes in the ocean interior.
		The carbon cycle model is needed in order to capture several important climate feedbacks on carbon dioxide concentration, for instance fertilisation of plant growth by carbon dioxide and uptake or outgassing of carbon dioxide by the oceans.

		Relocatable models are very limited on the size of the geographical area for which they can forecast, but these models have very high resolutions, or very small forecast grid boxes.
		The ocean model coupled with the atmospheric model is used to forecast events such as an El Nino warming event in the Pacific Ocean and in long range seasonal outlooks.
		The model does not forecast for large distances away from the hurricane because its main focus is the development and the movement of the hurricane.

	Reasoning Errors In The Current Models of Human Cognition
		Modeling on computer is regarded as a useful way of 'flushing out' all the details of the model, thus eliminating the 'ignoring complexity' problem.
		In its outcome, this error is equivalent to the model space size error, but it stems from different source: in the model space size error the researcher knows that the feature is complex, but is unaware of the model space size problem, while here the researcher is unaware of the complexity of the feature.
		The 'computational' approach may be an explicit version of this error, depending on what is assumed in the computational model.

		Our experience is that the environment of computer modeling often leads one to ask new questions, or to ask old questions in new ways-- questions about chaos within patterns of paradoxical reasoning or epistemic crises, for example, or Hobbesian questions asked within a spatialization of game-theoretic strategies.
		Models prove useful both in exposition and exploration precisely because they're simpler, and therefore easier to handle and easier to track, than the bewildering richness of the full phenomena under study.

		In such a situation it is possible that the global model response to anthropogenic forcing would have a weaker projection onto the model's patterns of internal variability than in the real world.
		The results so far are strongly model dependent, which points to the need for better understanding of the important physical mechanisms and dominant feedbacks in the climate system, and the way these processes interact on a range of timescales.

		With a computer model, it is possible, within a few days of development, for it to become so complex that it is a virtual impossibility for an outsider to understand it fully.
		When we were pioneering the applications of computer modelling about forty years ago, we soon came to the conclusion that a model is useless unless it can be tested against reality.
		If a model gives a reasonably accurate prediction on a simple system then we have reasonable, but not irrefutable, grounds for believing it to be accurate in other circumstances.

		To forecast the track and intensity of tropical cyclones, the NHC uses several different mathematical computer models that represent the tropical cyclone and its environment in a greatly simplified manner.
		It is important to know that these models are only run a few times a day and cannot, therefore, take into account all of the short-term changes the atmosphere is constantly undergoing.
		When the models do disagree, hurricane forecasters must use their experience and judgment to decide which model is performing the best under the current conditions.
