Computer supported cooperative work - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
CSCW [is] a generic term, which combines the understanding of the way people work in groups with the enabling technologies of computer networking, and associated hardware, software, services and techniques.
Cooperation and collaboration do not differ in terms of whether or not the task is distributed, but by virtue of the way in which it is divided; in cooperation the task is split (hierarchically) into independent subtasks; in collaboration cognitive processes may be (heterarchically) divided into intertwined layers.
The concept of cooperation is often used in relation to the concepts of coordination and communication.

Ellis defines groupware as "computer-based systems that support groups of people engaged in a common task (or goal) and that provide an interface to a shared environment." While groupware refers to real computer-based systems, means the notion CSCW the study of tools and techniques of groupware as well as their psychological, social and organizational effects.
Key issues of CSCW are group awareness, multi-user interfaces, concurrency control, communication and coordination within the group, shared information space and the support of a heterogenous, open environment which integrates existing single-user applications.
CSCW systems are often categorized according to the time/location matrix using the distinction between same time (synchronous) and different times (asynchronous), and between same place (face-to-face) and different places (distributed).

Computer-supported cooperative work (CSCW) is the research domain investigating the use of computers as if they were telecommunications devices to support small-group, human-to-human communication.
In comparing Japanese and American progress in computer-supported cooperative work research, it is helpful to differentiate approaches to the research and also to differentiate types of CSCW applications.
Of the CSCW research conducted in Japan, virtually none adopts the empirical approach; almost all of the research that does exist is in prototype development.

Computer Supported Cooperative Work - A Framework
Sometimes this is for the purposes of instruction, in these cases the aim of the work is establishing understanding and skill in the novice, the artefact of work is a tool to that end.
In particular, we have seen how computer mediated communication should be seen as just an element in a cooperative work situation and as an element which should be integrated into a general 'environment for cooperation'.
The general message is that systems to support cooperative work should take a larger view of cooperation, and that system not specifically designed to support cooperation should consider their effects on cooperative work.

It is an interdisciplinary activity and the research group works closely with the Sociology Department who carry out studies into the cooperative nature of work.

Fair Information Practices with Computer Supported Cooperative Work
CSCW refers to both special products (groupware), and to a social movement by computer scientists who want to provide better computer support for people, primarily professionals, to enhance the ease of collaborating.
These three elements, taken together, differentiate CSCW from other related forms of computerization, such as information systems and office automation which differ as much in their typical users and the worldview describing the role of technology in work, as on the technology itself (Kling, 1991).
The CSCW research community is well positioned to conduct the kinds of research into the social practices for using these technologies which could shape meaningful professional guidelines for their use in diverse organizations.

From its first appearance in 1984, Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) has attracted a lot of research attention in distributed systems.
There generally lacks a sound infrastructure to support the development of a wide variety of CSCW applications.
It is essential to formalize the collaboration concepts, model the cooperative and communicative activities, erect CSCW-oriented architectures, and construct a flexible and extendable development environment for building CSCW applications.

Tom Gross' CSCW & Groupware Page
Computer-Supported Cooperative Work is a discipline concerned with the study of human behaviour (in groups) and the technical support (groupware systems) thereof.
More fundamentally, CSCW can be seen as a conceptual shift in our understanding of computing--whereas the classical view of computing was manipulation of data by isolated individuals, the CSCW view of computing is manipulation and exchange of data and information as well as cooperation by individuals aware of their environment as well as other users.
