 Computing at Columbia Timeline
Even though IBM 7000 series computers were to be the mainstay of Columbia computing for the next several years, the handwriting was on the wall; their capacity would soon be overwhelmed by increasing demand.
The Astronomical Computing Bureau in Pupin, now directed by Jan Schilt (but with Eckert still running the show from Washington), was assigned to tasks for the looming war, such as ballistic firing tables, and trajectory calculations, and later, design calculations for the B-29 sighting station [57,59] — "Mathematics Goes to War" [9].
This was to be the locus for computer science instruction and research until the establishment of a separate Computer Science Department in 1979.

According to Tuthill and Klatt (1990), “Anatomic and clinical pathology laboratories were particularly well-suited to adopt the new technologies, given that they generate and distribute large amounts of numeric data for use by a variety of health care providers”.
As personal computing developed, the 1980’s saw an explosion in the use of these devices, particularly in clinical laboratory settings.
With the advent of digital computing in the 1940’s life, as we know it, began a phenomenal transition.
