MARDI GRAS | News for New Orleans, Louisiana | wwltv.com
For over a century, the Mistick Krewe of Comus has helped bring closure to Carnival, first with its old-line Mardi Gras night parade (which left the streets in 1991), and then its classic tableaux ball and annual Meeting of the Courts of Comus and Rex.
Comus was also the first krewe to form a secret Carnival society (orginally made up of several former residents of Mobile, Alabama), and to adopt a mythological namesake (the Greek god of festive mirth).
Comus would, up until its last parade in 1991 (the krewe stopped parading as a result of the city's anti-discrimination ordinance), continue to present a parade reminiscent of its 19th century roots, with beautifully designed floats rolling on chassis transported via old wagon wheels and lit by flambeaux.

 Milton: Comus - Notes
Milton iamgines Comus as the son of Bacchus and Circe.
Comus works fairly hard at sounding like a rustic swain, peppering his speech with what he takes to be the lexicon of such country folk, but he may also sound rather foolish to the Lady.
Since the Lady speaks of Comus in the third person, and she would hardly waste her rhetoric on Comus's beastly crew, we might imagine that she is directly addressing the audience.

COMUS ~ John Milton ~ eBookMall ~ eBooks
Comus is a Masque drama by John Milton.
Comus is a prowling magician of Satanic proportions who comes across a Lady in the forest.
Because she is an "unconquer'd virgin" she has no escape to his enticements, but once she is trapped by his deceit, her salvation lies in her obedience to Christ and her family.

 Gender and Comus
While alternative readings have focused on Comus himself or perceptions of masculinity in the piece, much of the masque itself seems concerned with problematizing the role of women in society, even playing with certain conventions to force a confrontation between the anxieties surrounding women on their own and the realities of women's experiences and abilities.
Whether parrying with Comus in a classic stichomythia in the woods or debating the nature of bounty with classical examples or defending her chastity with words, the Lady enjoys the most complicated writing as well as the most multifaceted role in the masque.
Her role in the masque appears to balance that of the Lady: when the Lady has fallen silent upon the arrival of her brothers and the flight of Comus, Sabrina is called upon to release the Lady from the magical chair whose charms cannot be broken by the men.

 comus.html
In Greek mythology Comus is the god of revelry, the son of Circe and Bacchus.
Comus is also the title of a dramatic poem by the renowned 17th Century English poet, John Milton, and the poem's central theme - female chastity tempted in the archetypal 'wild wood' of moral perplexity by the demonic enchanter, Comus - sets the tone for First Utterance, especially 'The Song To Comus'.
Comus, then, were probably willing participants in a similar marketing strategy which also failed to achieve the desired commercial goal.

Comus - First Utterance Review - sputnikmusic
Pinning together the mindset of folk with the constantly evolving nature of progressive rock, Comus was able to release a record that experimentally will, in my opinion, never be dated.
Whenever I think of Comus, that recording always pops up because they both have the same atmospheric effect on me. Both recordings remind me of mountains, and issues associated with fantasy.
Where other bands are concerned with emotional impacts, Comus has rather side stepped that motive and is instead focusing on transporting their listener to another plateau.

The masque in Milton's Arcades and Comus.
The girl is brought to Comus' palace and Milton's choice to do so heightens the tension, since Comus has the Lady to her disadvantage and we now see the Lady as a victim not only of Comus' deception but also of her own naiveté.
For example, when the Lady refuses Comus' flattery and his ideas of the supernatural element of the forest, she says, «Nay gentle shepherd ill is lost that praise.» Even though she is virtuous enough to refuse Comus' seduction, she does however accept him as a «gentle» shepherd.
Furthermore, when Comus deceives the Lady, he does not take her further into the forest, but back to a palace, which is probably closer to a representation of the court than the country.

Despite existing only for a brief period during the early 70s and being largely obscure throughout that period, it's undoubtable that COMUS was one of the most interesting bands to emerge from the folk-prog scene.
As for “To Keep From Crying”, if you manage to track it down (which you aren't likely to do), odds are you're just leaving yourself to be let down, as it is vastly inferior to the brilliant debut.
COMUS is recommended for any fans of folk-prog (that is, unless you're afraid of a little weirdness in your music), but even if you don't listen to that particular style, you shouldn't have a hard time appreciating their outrageous, crazy style if you like that sort of thing.

Brainwashed - Comus, "Song to Comus: The Complete Collection"   (Site not responding. Last check: )
Far from being the sort of contrived, antiseptic art-rock normally associated with the "progressive" tag, the music made by Comus is fierce and visceral, passionate and intense, living in an ever-present now.
To listen to First Utterance is to be kidnapped by cult of forest-dwelling mages and witches, who drug you, blindfold you, strip you naked and convey your cold, quivering corpus to a clearing in the woods, where you are forced to participate in an ancient initiation rite.
The edgy, insanely creative and instrumentally proficient Comus from the first album is nowhere in sight, and in its place is nothing but a throwaway piece of MOR folk-rock fare, poorly produced and containing no memorable songs.
