		A confidence trick, confidence game, also known as a con, scam, grift or flim flam, is an attempt to intentionally mislead a person or persons (known as the "mark") usually with the goal of financial or other gain.
		Sometimes con men rely on naïve individuals who put their confidence in get-rich-quick schemes, such as "too good to be true" investments.
		Psychic surgery is a con game in which the trickster uses sleight of hand to pretend to remove bits of malignant growths from the mark's body.

	Con Artistry
		Game Masters usually get into cons free (that is, they don’t pay the registration fee, which can get pretty steep at times) so I always run at least one game, sometimes to the exclusion of playing in any others.
		That’s a subtle balance, and since con games are hard to make up on the fly (as you typically don’t have the characters’ backstories to fall back upon) you’ll probably need to gently nudge the characters towards your storyline if they go off on a tangent.
		Since con games are of necessity plot-driven as opposed to character driven, it’s a big help to know what’s going to happen when (unless the characters intervene).

		I'm not sure when it originated, but the general idea was that as a perpetrator you gained the confidence of some unsuspecting person, and then when he or she least expected it, you tricked that person out of something (usually money).

		If a GM has advertised a game as "bring your own characters", and doesn't have pregens available, then if a player who rightfully got into the game has no characters that are even remotely reasonable for the scenario, the GM still basically has to allow the player to play one of them.
		FWIW, I count a game where players are allowed to offer their own characters, but the GM has pregens available in case none of the player's characters is suitable, as a game with pre-generated characters, and I'll play in those.
		I didn't mean to imply that all players playing their own characters in con games are socially retarded uber-munchkins...
