Ferries were in operation between Conanicut Island and Newport by 1675.
In 1678, Conanicut Island was incorporated as the town of Jamestown.
There are several active farms on the island, old neighborhoods are intact and historic properties in and near the island - such as windmills and the remains of old military fortifications - remain in place; serving as constant reminders of the history of the island, the Bay and this country.

Dutch Island remained a quiet sheep pasture with a Lighthouse until a Civil War encampment was established in 1864 and later developed as Fort Greble that was fortified during both the Civil War and the Spanish American War.

The commander-in-chief was ordered back to Rhode Island to gather all available ships for operations against the fisheries and British merchants in Newfoundland, but because so many sailors were being recruited on privateers, he wasn't able to man the ships.
