The relationships between one Conception Bay community, Brigus, and the Labrador fishery are explored in a 1988 Memorial University master's thesis by Robert Lewis.

Basque whalers in Red Bay preferred to construct their shore stations in locations which were both close to deep water and sheltered from the northeast and southwest winds.
After their visit to Newfoundland both Gilbert and his companion Hayes became more interested in the possibilities of northern settlement, but Gilbert was to drown a few weeks later on the way to his proposed southern colony.
The early proponents of Newfoundland settlement offered various grandiose reasons for their schemes, but the special advantages of the island were more relevant and these were, largely, related to the fishery.

Lorraine Jones Moores grew up in Foxtrap, Conception Bay South, Newfoundland in the 1940s and 50s.Her memories of knowing most people in the immediate area, and of her parents, seemingly knowing everyone they met along the Shore, led her to explore her family history.
Lorraine was president of the Newfoundland and Labrador Genealogical Society from 1999 to 2002 having held several executive positiions during the ten years she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Society.
