Newfoundland is separated from the Labrador Peninsula by the Strait of Belle Isle and from Cape Breton Island by the Cabot Strait.
Newfoundland had lost about one-quarter of its young men in WWI and it has been suggested that this loss of so many men, proportionally speaking, in the prime of their lives contributed to the economic collapse that was to ultimately influence confederation with Canada.
Newfoundland and Labrador is the youngest province in Canada, having enjoyed the status of a country until 1949.

Newfoundland and Labrador (French, Terre-Neuve-et-Labrador, Irish: Talamh an Éisc agus Labradóir, Latin: Terra Nova) is a province of Canada, the tenth to join Confederation.
But since 1964, the province's government has referred to itself as the "Government of Newfoundland and Labrador", and on December 6, 2001, an amendment was made to the Constitution of Canada to change the province's official name to "Newfoundland and Labrador".
Newfoundland received a colonial assembly in 1832, which was and still is referred to as the House of Assembly, after a fight led by reformers William Carson, Patrick Morris and John Kent.

Harbour Grace is one of the oldest towns in Conception Bay on the Avalon Peninsula in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.
Harbour Grace was an important port and fishing center since the earliest days of European exploration of North America.
While the population declined in the coming decades, Harbour Grace did have a brief upswing in the early twentieth century because of its proximity to continental Europe.

The first was the determination of Newfoundland to retain control of Labrador coastal waters, as an abundant harvest for the annual voyages of fishermen from the Island.
Central Labrador - the district of Naskaupi - may be taken as comprising the shores of Hamilton Inlet and its drainage basin, historically the hunting and trapping territory of the Innu and the metis "settlers".
Following Newfoundland's confederation with Canada in 1949, Labrador had its own representation in the House of Assembly although the successful candidates until the 1960s were primarily residents from the Island part of the new province, a matter that many Labradorians still feel strongly about.

Newfoundland, Town, population 891 (1996 census), incorporated 1965, lies on the southwest shore of CONCEPTION BAY on the AVALON PENINSULA.
The LABRADOR part of the province may have received its name from the Portuguese designation, "Terra del Lavradors." CAPE SPEAR, near ST JOHN'S, is the easternmost point of the province and thus, excepting Greenland, of North America.
Despite the harsh climate of Newfoundland, the trepidations of pirates and the ill preperation of English colonists for the Newfoundland environment, the Colony of Avalon was successful.

While the harbour provides good shelter for the small boats, its access is made perilous by submerged rocks; the rocky bottom affords no holding ground and its shape channels heavy swells inward (in a 1966 storm 90% of landing facilities were destroyed).
This is because of the harbour's undeniable scenic charm and proximity to St. John's.
This meant that the Labrador sealing captains spread from St. John's and Conception Bay north to Pool's Island, Badger's Quay and the Cape Settlements of Brookfield and Wesleyville.

Newfoundland's long-standing Labrador boundary dispute with Canada was resolved to the satisfaction of Newfoundland and Canada (but not Quebec, the province that bordered Labrador) with the ruling, on April 1, 1927 by the Imperial Privy Council.
Its report, released in 1933, assessed Newfoundland's political culture as intrinsically corrupt and its economic prospects bleak, and advocated the abolition of responsible government on the island, to be replaced by a Commission of the British Government.

He was in Newfoundland by around 1751 and was involved in the fishery and in the building of ships and boats at Bell Island.

The Harbour Grace Regatta, which is held every summer in August, is one of the oldest sporting events in North America.
The SS Kyle, which is aground in the harbour, was built in 1913 and became the first boat to provide Labrador with a regular scheduled service.
