The United States Military Academy Concert Band is a direct descendant of the small Band of Musick that had assembled at West Point by 1817.

His 1952 contribution to the sesquicentennial of the United States Military Academy, Symphony for Band, commissioned by the Concert Band, still stands as a staple in the contemporary wind band repertoire.

Though the instrumentation is similar, it is distinguished from the marching band in that its primary function is as a concert ensemble.
The earliest days of the mixed wind band date back to the 13th century, with ensembles of shawms, trumpets, and drums forming in Europe; a century or two later the trombone was added to the mix, and this was the ensemble of choice for dances and festive occasions.
However, as the wind band moved out of the sole domain of the military marching ensemble and into the concert hall, it has gained favor with composers, and now many works are being written specifically for the concert band and the wind ensemble.

The band (with the exception of the trombone) is introduced to the two sixteenth followed by eighth note rhythm earlier than most methods would introduce this rhythm, but it is easily understandable in the context of this piece.
Although these two musical elements are not part of the 1st year band's study, the catchy tune and the rock beat along with the 8 bar drum solo will make this a tune that can be played by 1st year bands, or even older bands for pep rallies.
This is a melodic 6/8 concert march who's "A" section can easily become a new school song for the new school, or an older school wishing to make a change from being one of the 10,000 schools that uses "On Wisconsin" as their fight song.

While the marching band is certainly an important aspect of our total band program and is without question vital to our overall success, the majority of our school year is spent in developing our musicians through a strong concert program.
Membership in the marching band is not required of members of the concert bands.
Since such a high percentage of the band members are involved in marching band, the first few weeks of the school year are spent primarily rehearsing music to be performed by the marching band, however the emphasis is switched toward concert band literature by October.

Originally conceived as the Redmen's Band, it began as an offshoot of the fraternal organization for descendants of the Boston Tea Party "Indians." Based in its early years in Wakefield and Melrose, it may be recalled as the Redmen's Marching Band, renowned for its colorful and authentic Plains Indian costumes that included full headdress.
