The Concert Dance Company provides a fresh opportunity to learn and choreograph a variety of different dance styles.
Rehearsals are held in the campus dance studio (McPhee) on a weekly basis throughout the Fall and Spring semesters.

 Dance in Concert 2000 promises spectacular performances
Since before 1970, the department of theater and dance has been having its annual Dance in Concert, and this year's Dance in Concert 2000 promises to be spectacular.
Another piece of the dance faculty's choreography will be "Psalm." Instructor Paula Beals categorized her work as a "tribute to her time with the Martha Graham Dance Company." She added this year's Dance in Concert will focus on the more traditional side of Dance in Concert in its modern era.
SIUE theater and dance department professor J. Calvin Jarrel has also contributed a dream-full of his own work this year in his medley "Through the Space of Time Sleeps the Dream." Specially designed costumes, lighting effects and even a flight sequence will be included.

 Great Performances: Free To Dance - Behind The Dance - Pioneers in Negro Concert Dance
As organizer and director of the Negro Art Theatre Dance, he had directed a small group of dancers as early as 1928 for appearances in plays written by his mother Jeroline.
The decision to pursue a dance career resulted from his successful appearance as a substitute dancer in his company's production of Oscar Wilde's " Salome." The first appearance of his dance company, the Bronze Ballet Plastique, on March 6, 1931 in Yonkers, New York, was sponsored by the Benefit for Colored Citizens Unemployment Relief Committee.
Hemsley was now "regarded as the initiator and chief exponent of Negro concert dancing in the United States." It was according to some, "the outstanding novelty of the dance season," and "one rich in promise." However, dance critic John Martin questioned Negro dancers performing material associated with white dancers.
