When one considers the fastidious approach Simon is known to have adopted during his concert tours in the 1970s one might reasonably ask why proper sound balances were not carried out earlier, so the listener would not have to pay to hear people learn their craft.
Simon and Garfunkel's rapturous reception was a testimony that, "after changes upon changes/we are more or less the same." That the turmoil of the intervening years was a bad dream, like Cambodia and Watergate had never happened.
Simon was haunted for days afterwards, with the kid's words ringing in his ears: "Paul, I need to talk to you." That was how much Simon and Garfunkel meant to their millions of fans.

This concert film had some fun moments, but it never felt like a full-fledged Simon and Garfunkel reunion.
Simon's solo numbers(which make up slightly more than half the set) all get big, lush arrangements, while the SandG songs sound spare and sloppy and tossed-off.
The duo was spectacular throughout their 2003-04 tour, and the concert on the new DVD(well, the set is actually culled from TWO concerts) is much longer.

This free concert held in New York City's Central Park in September 1981 reunited the 20th Century's most successful musical duo in their home city ("It's great to do a neighborhood concert" as Paul Simon quips early in the show).
As a Simon and Garfunkel fan since the mid sixties, I fell in love with this album when it was first relesed on vinyl, and when I saw it was on DVD I had to have it.
This DVD was the first installment of my Simon and Garfunkel collection, bought on a whim after watching a clip of "Late in the Evening." Many reviewers will cite the duo's past problems, tensions, and arguments but this performances either doesn't show it, or masks it very well.

It will be their first after almost 20 years, since the small tour that followed the Central Park concert where they played, free, to an estimated 500 000 people on a balmy September evening.
Simon and Garfunkel were pushing 40 at the time of the show, and while both occasionally look a little bored, don’t be fooled.
Art Garfunkel's "hands in the pockets" look is just the way he stands and his few comments to the large hometown crowd give away the fact that was vibed that night and loving every minute of it.

Simon and Garfunkel - The Concert in Central Park
The band is essentially the band Paul Simon adopted from the mid seventies to the early eighties and thus all the songs are given the same "sound" featured on all of Simon's solo records from that era.
Garfunkel is handed the solo spotlight on just two occasions, the first time to perform one of his own solo songs, the apt "A Heart In New York", and again to perform "Bridge Over Troubled Water".
As enjoyable as Paul Simon's solo songs are, particularly the lively "Late In The Evening", this is a Simon & Garfunkel reunion concert after all and it's a shame some of the solo efforts weren't curtailed to allow more time for performing such obvious Simon & Garfunkel crowd pleasers as "El Condor Pasa" and "Cecilia".

The most successful folk-rock duo of the 1960s, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel crafted a series of memorable hit albums and singles featuring their choirboy harmonies, ringing acoustic, and electric guitars; and Simon's acute, finely wrought songwriting.
But the best of S&G's work can stand among Simon's best material, and the duo did progress musically over the course of their five albums, moving from basic folk-rock productions into Latin rhythms and gospel-influenced arrangements that foreshadowed Simon's eclecticism on his solo albums.
Simon & Garfunkel's recording history actually predated their first mid-'60s hit by almost a decade.

As one half of the 1960s folk-rock team, Simon and Garfunkel, Paul Simon's place in pop music history as a first rate songwriter was sealed.
But after Simon's split with his partner in 1970, this Newark, New Jersey-born musician went on to not only distinguish himself as a veteran songwriter with a substantial body of work, but as a performer who experimented with a variety of musical genres.
Although Simon had experimented with a variety of styles that strayed from Simon and Garfunkel's poetic folk-rock formula when he was part of that duo ("Cecilia" and "El Condor Pasa," for example), Simon's first post-breakup solo record was more eclectic.

Barnes & Noble.com - Simon and Garfunkel: The Concert in Central Park - DVD
In 1981, Paul Simon and Art Garfunkel -- former musical partners who had a rancorous falling-out after the success of their album Bridge Over Troubled Water -- set aside their differences and reunited for a concert tour, with the New York City date being a free concert in Central Park.
The Central Park show was recorded and videotaped for later release, and this home video release presents highlights from the show, with Simon and Garfunkel performing their hits as a duo as well as several of their solo hits.
I recorded it live from the broadcast in 1981 but that tape is tired so this DVD is an archive for me. They did a great job editing this so the songs and the comments between them by Paul and Art are retained.

When a rock band was overdubbed onto the original acoustic version of their single "The Sounds of Silence", a hit resulted and helped further the then-nascent folk-rock movement.
