		Another Italian composer and violin virtuoso, Giuseppe Torelli, who was born in Verona in 1658, wrote 12 concerti grossi, his opus 8 around 1709, also for strings and continuo, and his number six, also in G Minor, is a pastoral for the holy night of Christmas.
		His contemporary Francesco Manfredini, who was born in Pistoia around 1680, wrote concerti grossi and a set of 12 Sinfoni da chiesa in 1709 (he was the Choir Master at Pistoia Cathedral from 1734) but his work does not have the extended development or profound craftsmanship of Locatelli.
		Apart from concerti grossi, 24 Violin sonatas and 6 Cello sonatas, he wrote a ballet La foresta incantata produced in Paris in 1754.

	J S BACH - Violin Concertos - A Good-Music-Guide Review
		What survives is 2 concerti for solo violin (BWV 1041-1042), a concerto for two violins (BWV 1043), a triple concerto for flute, violin and harpsichord (BWV 1044), 6 other concerti for groups of solo instruments (The Brandenburg Concerti, BWV 1046-1051), and 14 concerti for one or more harpsichords (BWV 1052-1065).
		The difficulty begins with the fact that the harpsichord concerti were probably all originally written for other instruments, and transcribed by Bach for the harpsichord.
		Well, the three violin concerti on this CD are Bach originals, the only violin concerti that have thankfully survived.

		The opening movement is followed in all the concerti except II by a movement in a slower tempo and a pair of faster movements, with an interpolated slow movement in Concerto V. Corelli's imagination in effects of texture and his range of stylistic reference are as rich as his command of formal variety.

		In 1714 the 12 Concerti Grossi, Op.6 by Corelli became available in printed edition and was immediately available throughout Europe due to the "pirated" editions in Amersterdam.
		The set of six Concerti Grossi was dedicated to the Margrave on his 44th birthday, 24 March, 1721, according to the signature on the preface page, in Bach's own hand.
		I think the oddity in Brandenburg Concerti really lies with the fact that the 6 of them are banded to form a group: perhaps this was only done because it was the practise at the time for composers to write set of 6 or 12 before presenting them to someone else or for publication.

		The scores of these works exist only in the form of harpsichord concerti, which Bach scholars believe were in fact transcriptions from their original form (written for the oboe, as well as other likely candidates such as the violin).
		All of Bach's concerti are brilliant jewels of melodic inspiration, and I think regular readers of the Inkpot need no introduction to the music (nevertheless, check out the various links here for more information).
		And interestingly, the orchestra and conductor are the same on this disc and the harpsichord concerti sets - but the interpretational styles sound worlds apart.
