Conchobar Maenmaige took his nickname from the territory of Maenmaigh (the plain surrounding Loughrea to the west, north and north-east) where he had being fostered as a child.
This successful first act was denied a sequel when in 1189 Conchobar was killed by Manus mac Flann O Finaghty, Aodh mac Brian (his first cousin), Muircheartach mac Cathal mac Dermot mac Tadhg, and Giolla na Naomh O Mulvihill of the Tuathas.
Of Conchobar's remaining known children, Mathghamhain was killed in 1196, as was Muirchertach in 1204, and Donnchadh in 1207; Tadhg was recorded as alive in 1210, Maelsechlain was killed in 1220, while Aodh, or Hugh, died in 1224 "on his return from Jerusalem and the River Jordan."

Child 1: macRuaidrí, Conchobar Máenmaige, King of Connacht
On the death of Toirrdelbach Ua Conchobair, the Ard Rí was won by Muirchertach Mac Lochlainn, king of the Uí Néill. However, Muirchertach was guilty of outrageous cruelty to some submissive chiefs, and lost the Ard Rí, and his life, to Ruadrí Ua Conchobair (Rory O'Connor), son of the previous Ard Rí, Toirrdelbach.
This was one of the most favoured of early Irish names, and gave rise to the surname in at least five distinct areas, in Connacht (O'Conor Don), in Offaly (O'Conor Faly), in north Clare (O'Conor of Corcomroe), in Keenaght in Co Derry, and in Kerry (O'Connor Kerry).
