Obituary: Joaquin Rodrigo, famed Spanish composer dies   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-12)
Aranjuez, the work's location, points to the end of the 18th century and the Spanish courts of Carlos IV and Fernando VII.
Concierto de Aranjuez, a synthesis of classical and popular in both form and emotion, lies dreaming beneath the foliage of the park that surrounds the Baroque palace, and only wishes to be as agile as a butterfly and as precise as a matador's cape pass.”
As Kamhi explained in a later biography, the young couple faced tremendous poverty, she was pregnant and at one point Rodrigo fell seriously ill after developing an abscess in his eye.

Concierto de Aranjuez - Majestic, Mournful, Melancholy Yet Inspiring
When writing the Concierto de Aranjuez, Rodrigo would never have imagined that it would become not only the most famous guitar concerto of all time, but one of the most popular concertos of all time of any instrument.
In the Concierto de Aranjuez he was able to combine both folkloric and classical traditions so successfully that a music critic stated at the time...
The Concierto de Aranjuez by Rodrigo has stood the test of time to date and shall continue to stand the test of time in the future because it is classical music in its highest form yet so accessible at the same time.

The album is entitled "Concierto de Aranjuez" after one of the masterworks of the Spanish composer Joaquin Rodrigo.
The "Concierto de Aranjuez", a mature and astonishingly well-balanced composition, explored new fields of harmony and rhythm and opened up vistas in the use of the orchestra and the solo instrument.
In the "Concierto de Aranjuez", the guitar, in spite of its distant sound, never becomes submerged in the orchestra, but asserts its individuality and even dialogues with it.

It became the most popular 20th-century concerto ever written, being arranged for many other solo instruments; the theme of the second movement was also famously adapted by Miles Davis in his Sketches of Spain album in 1960, his version in turn becoming a jazz standard.

Concierto de Aranjuez: A Bit of Mysticism?
Aranjuez sat in the midst of a hot, dry, and dusty plain.
Though he wrote lots of music, Rodrigo would never again reach the heights that the Concierto de Aranjuez attained, would never quite find the way of reaching behind the intellectual defenses into the core being of the audience with such force.
So what we have here is a partnership in restrained lyricism, and the result is one of the most beautiful and endearing recordings of the Concierto de Aranjuez I’ve heard, with great sensitivity to the work, and especially the Adagio.

A brass version of the Adagio made a prominent appearance in the 1992 British movie Brassed Off, played by Grimethorpe Colliery Band and referred to by the film's characters as 'Rodrigo's Concierto de Orange Juice', with 'orange juice' being a humorously anglicized pronunciation of name of the Spanish town of 'Aranjuez'.

Isbin’s remake of the most celebrated of all guitar concertos, however, is still more fetching and is part of a stronger program in which its companion pieces are the most admired specimens of the genre from North and South America, those by the Mexican Manuel Ponce and the Brazilian Heitor Villa-Lobos.
The only slip-up in this fine package of the three outstanding guitar concertos of the 20th century is the reversal of the captions under the photos of Ponce and Villa-Lobos -- which, of course, does not affect the listening pleasure at all.
