Concordia Seminary is operated by the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod (LCMS), and Valparaiso University, although free of any official institutional affiliation with the LCMS, has since 1925, when it was purchased by individual members of the church, considered itself a Lutheran university of Missouri Synod heritage.
As in the Concordia case, those institutions that do operate with restrictions are visited by the AAUP with intellectual ostracism and academic sanctions: they are officially censured and the rest of the academic community is in effect told that it should have no dealings with them unless and until they change their policies.
The Concordia case, for all its paradigmatic significance, is not by itself a fully satisfactory referent for the issues involved in the problem of academic freedom and the religious university.

There is the impression that Concordia Seminary more or less ignores the existence of the ELCROS and considers Russia and the CIS as its broad field for mission work.
In his statement, President Wenthe suggested that Concordia Seminary is interested in and ready for communication and cooperation with the ELCROS, but he also pointed out that communication and cooperation go only so far as the doctrines of the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod are upheld.
However, in further talks it became clear that the intention of Concordia Seminary is to embody "true historical Lutheran theology." And it became clear that in the view of Concordia Seminary and the Seminary in Novosibirsk, the ELCROS on several points does not stand on the ground of this "true historical Lutheran theology."
