Microphones are used in many applications such as telephones, tape recorders, hearing aids and in radio and television broadcasting.
Electret microphones have existed since the 1920s but were considered impractical, but have now become the most common type of all, used in many applications from high-quality PA to built-in microphones in small sound recording devices.
In the dynamic microphone a small movable induction coil, positioned in the magnetic field of a permanent magnet, is attached to the diaphragm.

 Powering microphones
Many types of microphones require power to operate, as a general rule these types are described as condenser microphones.
Typical electret condenser microphone capsule is a 2 terminal device (there are also 3 pin capsules) which approximates to a current source when biassed with around 1-9 volt and routinely consumes less than half a milliamp.
The advantage of T-power is that the shield of the microphone cable need not be connected at both ends, thus this allows the common practice of disconnecting one end of the shield to a microphone in order to prevent hum (earth loops).

 Microphones
Condenser types require batteries or power from the mixing console to operate, which is occasionally a hassle, and dynamics require shielding from stray magnetic fields, which makes them a bit heavy sometmes, but very fine microphones are available of both styles.
Microphones produce a very small amount of current, which makes sense when you consider just how light the moving parts must be to accurately follow sound waves.
The practical range of distance between the instrument and the microphone is determined by the point where the sound overloads the microphone or console at the near end, and the point where ambient noise becomes objectionable at the far end.

Transom Tools: Recording/Interviewing: What Microphone Do I Get?
Condenser mics are often a little more expensive, usually have a louder, more detailed output, but one should not overlook the benefits of dynamic mics, especially in the field.
Condenser mics break more easily if dropped, and require phantom power to operate, which must come from the recorder (draining batteries faster) a mixer, a preamp, or a separate power source.
All microphones require a pre-amp stage to raise levels approximately 60dB, but condensers, and some other types of mics, also require a low-level current to charge the diaphragm of the mic, setting up the electrical differential between the diaphragm and the backplate of the mic.

BLUE Dragonfly Cardioid Condenser Microphone - SameDayMusic.com
They design and manufacture all capsules (the heart of the microphone) as well as precision parts, from the smallest screw to the large body shells used for their Bottle microphones.
BLUE's solid state and tube microphone amplifiers are based on a Class A, fully discrete circuit, employing a custom microphone transformer built and wound to their specifications.
The sonic design of their microphones was created by what they term TPO, or The Popular Opinioná the consensus of expert engineers and discriminating musicians on the type of sound that is needed in the recording process today.

 [No title]
Their main drawback compared to larger, more expensive microphones is a relatively high self-noise (roughly 30 to 40 dBa) but the self-noise is normally swamped by the ambient noise level at a concert.
The sounds that the two microphones record are exactly what the listener hears, including the effects of the outer ear (the pinna), the acoustic shadow of the head, and inter-ear phase and frequency response differences that provide localization cues (the information that lets you determine where a sound is coming from).
But because the microphone spacing is a bit narrow (7 to 9 inches instead of the more typical 24 to 36 inches) the stereo image may sound a bit compressed.

 Microphone Cables
The current produced by a typical 150-ohm microphone connected to a 1,000-ohm preamp input is less than 10 microamperes (that's 10 millionths of an ampere), with power of less than a microwatt.
While the improvement may not be as dramatic as changing the microphone, an increasing number of audio professionals seem to be embracing the sonic benefits of star-quad construction.
This causes it to behave as a crude piezoelectric transducer, a relative of an electret condenser microphone.

 CAD M9
As this is a cardioid microphone, the precise amount of bass lift is obviously dependent on the proximity of the sound source, but it generally adds a useful warmth and richness to the sound.
The only operational oddity I found was that switching the microphone's pad in and out caused a brief buzz and hiss which died away over a couple of seconds.
Instead of a simple attenuator on the input, it seems the gain structure of the preamp is changed by this switch, and the circuitry takes a short period to settle down afterwards.

Prior to the "session," pink noise was pumped into a speaker so that the "gain" of all the preamps could be made equal (using the Coles 4038 microphone and a VU meter on the console).
In a relatively "live" studio the SM-57 seemed to capture less room ambience when compared to the two condenser mics (both were set to the "cardioid" or unidirectional mode).
Aside from the obvious difference between dynamic and condenser, the cardioid pattern itself can not be taken for granted.

None of this is important except to note that we have to add a bit more fiddly stuff to power the mike...especially because they run power for the element on the _same wire_ as the _output signal_.
In addition, they do NOT exhibit the "proximity effect" of many microphones, where sound becomes fuller, deeper, and considerably louder when the source is very close to a mike (as in moving up next to a vocal mike.) These attributes can help or hurt, depending on the application.
Well, I used a couple of these mikes with Plexiglas plates as PZM type microphones to record the concert, and discovered that I was getting some ugly distortion on tape.
