Condrieu - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Condrieu is a French commune located in the Rhône département of the Rhône-Alpes région.
It is situated on the right bank of the Rhône, some 11 km south of Vienne and 44km south of Lyon, at the foot of the lower slopes of Mount Mounet.
Condrieu is known for its white wine, Condrieu AOC, and also for its cheese, Rigotte de Condrieu.

 DiWineTaste - Rhone Valley
Today the territory of Saint-Joseph AOC borders the Condrieu area to the north, and Cornas to the south, and it is the largest wine area of northern Rhône Valley.
The Condrieu wine area is located in the upper area of Northern Rhône Valley and it includes the smallest of AOC areas of about 3.4 hectares of extension: Château-Grillet.
Wines from the appellation Côte-du-Rhône AOC represent about 75% of the total wine produced in the Rhône Valley and the grapes used for their production come from a pretty vast area which extends in the whole territory of the region and of which the most representative one is located near the city of Avignon.

Viognier - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In France, Viognier is the single permitted grape variety in the famous appellations of Condrieu and Château Grillet, which are located on the west bank of the Rhône River, about 40 km south of Lyon.
The wines of Condrieu are the most famous Viogniers in the world, as their prices indicate.
The decline of Viognier in France from its historic peak has much to do with the disastrous introduction of Phylloxera insects from North America into Europe in the mid- and late-1800s, followed thereafter by the abandonment of the vineyards due to the chaos of World War I.

I've tried a few expensive Condrieus, and a few of those flabby California viogniers (which can, in truth, be pleasant enough), but the best I've ever had (insane flowery aromatics) was simply a Côtes-du-Rhône AOC from Chateau du Trignon labelled "viognier".
However, AOC labeling usually precludes varietal labeling, but I think I might have seen a few exception as of late (although firm details are not springing to mind)
There is a rarely seen northern AOC called (Brezeme I think) that can attach itself to the Cotes Du Rhone appelation, perhaps that is where your viognier was from.
