The Legislature overwhelmingly passed a resolution declaring Conecuh Ridge Fine Alabama Whiskey as the "official state spirit," but Gov. Bob Riley vetoed the resolution Thursday.
May's whiskey is a product of his family tree.

Conecuh Ridge is actually made in Bardstown, Ky., by Kentucky Bourbon Distillery, using a bourbon mash that detours from Clyde's original formula.
Conecuh Ridge (it's pronounced con-NEK-uh), is a raised spine that snakes through the middle of the county and was once known nationally for its homemade liquor.
Their dad usually placed his stills along a creek, near the mouth of one of the many sand-filtered springs that spangle the ridge, feeding the rich fl-belt country to the north and the poorer sandy-soiled land to the south.

Alan C. Boothe, D-Troy, sponsor of the whiskey resolution, openly criticized the governor from the House floor Thursday for not supporting what he says is a simple acknowledgement of a legal whiskey company's hard work.
The company, then-Conecuh Ridge Distillery, was founded in 1997 by Troy businessman Kenny May, who started the company as a salute to the memory of his late father and moonshine maker Clyde May.

The result is a 90-proof light-bodied sweetish red whiskey considered welcoming to novice drinkers, but not much of a challenge to the palates of Bourbon connoissuers.

The TBS crew came to "the ridge" last week to film May in the environment that was "conducive" to moonshining a generation ago.
"Conecuh Ridge Whiskey is the way to continue the family legacy by producing a batch of hand-crafted bourbon using the same techniques, standards and recipes my daddy used," May said.
Conecuh Ridge is crafted in Kentucky, but,within the next 18 months, May said plans are to open a distillery in Alabama that will one day become a major tourist attraction.

Conecuh Ridge is being made at a family distillery in Kentucky, but May said plans are to begin making the fine whiskey at a Conecuh Ridge distillery in Alabama in the near future.
But, for now, May is busy promoting his daddy's fine whiskey and he plans to carry on the family tradition in a legal and far reaching kind of way.

Anyway, the Conecuh Ridge bottle does not even come close to resembling the bottle's "image" that was illustrated in a Union Springs article earlier this year.
Instead of a rounded bottle displaying the state of Alabama and a whiskey still, the bottle has a rectangular shape with a medium neck and an orange/amber and grey label.
But the whiskey is so smooth and the nose is so sweet and mellow, it's hard to believe it's anything less than 4 years old.

Alabama’s open meetings law has served this state well since early in the 20th Century but a recent ruling by the State Supreme Court so riddled it with holes as to make it all but obsolete.
This session has given Alabama an official fruit, an official insect and an official state spirit (the liquid kind, not the supernatural).
He named it "Conecuh Ridge Fine Alabama Whiskey" and then had the great idea of getting Alabama legislators to label it the state’s official brand.

In my not-so-humble opinion whiskey should be served in a clear and un-tinted glass, no taller than it is wide, of simple shape (preferably cuboid or cylindrical), with a thick base.  Any distiller's name or logo should be tolerated (with reservations) only if it is etched into the glass rather than painted onto it.
