The Brethren Church (c) 2005   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-02)
The Brethren had been able to maintain their German subculture through the beginning of the 19th century, but increasingly the influence of American culture was felt on the brotherhood.
These yearly gatherings of Brethren from throughout the country began in the mid-1700's and had served the dual role of maintaining fellowship among the scattered Brethren and developing unity on questions of faith and practice that were considered by the assembled Brethren.
During the course of the 19th century the Brethren had to interact with American culture to an ever greater measure because the artificial barriers of a different language and insulated life on the frontier were steadily eroding.

The Progressive Brethren believed the brotherhood should make full use of practices such as Sunday Schools, higher education, evangelism, and spreading their mission to foreign lands to help spread their beliefs of the church, and they wanted to move into the mainstream of the American culture.

Two of the "burdensome" judaizing brethren accompanied Beissel on a visit to the other Baptist congregations early in 1725 and offended their hosts by refusing to eat pork, or in fact to partake of anything cooked in vessels that had formerly held unclean foods.
Some of the brethren sought Beissel's prayers, when cited to appear before the authorities; and were so reassured by Beissel's words, "that God had given the heart of the authorities into his hand, and he had turned it as he pleased," that many willingly paid their fines.
The single brethren and sisters, the solitaries, were mostly irresponsible, in that their thoughts were not on the affairs of this world; consequently they were apt to forget even to provide for their own sustenance.

The Brethren, in constituting their congregation, for the first few years of their existence, chose what was in Hochmann's mind the next best thing: continence in marriage {8}.

The epic of the settlement of America might not have occurred had not the Conestoga wagon been developed by the competent Dutch carpenters, smiths and wheelrights of Pennsylvania; for what the railroad coach or the freight car is to transportation today the Conestoga covered wagon was to pioneer America.
These Conestoga Dutch needed such large wagons themselves, and then they developed for the use of pioneers going westward in America con- stantly larger and sturdier models of covered wagons, which came to he known the nation over as Conestoga wagons, (because of their use with a special breed of Conestoga horses).
