Coney Island USA is a 501(c)(3) not-for-profit corporation based in the amusement park area of the Coney Island neighborhood of Brooklyn New York.
Coney Island USA was founded in the belief that 19th century American popular culture gave birth to a democratic cultural golden age, unique to this country’s history and indispensable to its future.
Coney Island USA is there to document, preserve and further the unique arts for the masses, providing national perspective, professional dedication and quality programming for Coney Island as it heads into the 21st century.

Coney Island is a peninsula and former island of southernmost Brooklyn, New York City, USA, with a famous beach lying on the Atlantic Ocean.
In Coney Island's lowest years there was some incremental improvement in relatively small areas, notably the preservation and later the expansion of what had been the rides area at the back of the Feltman's property as Astroland.
The main beach area, extended from Coney Island Avenue in Brighton Beach westward to West 37th Street at the border of Sea Gate, is divided into "bays," areas of beach delineated by rock jetties, which moderate erosion and the force of ocean waves.

The procession originated with Coney Island USA's idea to "take over the neighborhood one day a year and make it splashy," and it still attracts around a thousand marchers and nearly half a million spectators.
Zigun says the celebration is the biggest strain on Coney Island USA's small budget, but it's "gone through growing pains without becoming corporate." Still, a controversy was sparked last year when the parade used the new Keyspan Park stadium for part of the event.

Born in 1953 and raised in Bridgeport, Connecticut, the hometown of P.T. Barnum, Dick Zigun was aware of American show-business culture from an early age.
As Zigun tells it, he was standing on the amusement pier there when he had his epiphany: rather than putting on plays in the rarefied atmosphere of Soho lofts, he could merge his dramatic interests with the tradition of the neighborhood in which he lived.
In 1985 Coney Island USA opened Sideshows by the Seashore, and Zigun has been producing it ever since.

Dick borrowed from Coney's history as a place where, according to Ric Burns and Richard Snow's documentary, "the odd, the bizarre, the far-flung" were at home.
Zigun said his goal is for Coney to be the "capital of the weird again." Dick and all of the acts at Sideshows by the Seashore have worked diligently to make sure that the art of Coney Island has survived along with the past.

Back in Coney Island's glory days in the early 20th century, sideshows came in all shapes and sizes, just like the people who performed in them.
Accounts differ as to when the first sideshow came to Coney Island, but in 1904 Samuel W. Gumpertz opened Lilliputia (also known as Midget World) at the Dreamland amusement park.
Burkhart performed from 1985 to 1989 in the Coney Island Sideshow, then retired to Florida, where he lived to the ripe old age of 94.
