Confederacy of Independent Systems - Wookieepedia, the Star Wars Wiki - A Wikia wiki
The Confederacy of Independent Systems (CIS), also known as the Confederacy and the New Order, was the government formed by various planetary and sectorial governments, as well as some corporations, that declared intentions to leave the Galactic Republic during the Separatist Crisis and Clone Wars.
Since both sides of the war were controlled by the Sith, the Confederacy also laid the foundations of the Galactic Empire and its legacy lives on in the form of their Death Star project, which became the Empire's feared superweapon, and the Imperial battle droids.
The name "Confederacy of Independent Systems" is likely inspired by the real-world Commonwealth of Independent States (also shorthanded as CIS), which consists of almost all of the former republics of the Soviet Union (except the three Baltic nations).
