The Confederate States of America (CSA, also known as the Confederacy) was the political entity originally formed on February 4, 1861 by six Southern slave states (South Carolina, Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana).
In 1863, during the war, a unionist rump legislature in Wheeling, Virginia seceded from Virginia, claiming 48 counties, and joined the United States as the state of West Virginia, with a constitution that would have gradually abolished slaveryhttp://www.ls.net/~newriver/va/vasecesh.htm.
The Confederate military leadership was almost entirely composed of veterans from the United States Army and U.S. Navy who had resigned from their U.S. ranks and had been appointed to senior positions in the Confederate armed forces.

The Confederate cruisers built or bought in England were a scourge to the U.S. merchant marine, and later at the settlement of the Alabama claims, Great Britain was adjudged partly responsible for their depredations; but beyond this the Confederate missions of James M. Mason, John Slidell, William L. Yancey, and others in Europe achieved little.
Their extreme states’ rights views represented a logical development of the theory that had led the Southern states to secede, but their insistence on maintaining these views at a time when unity was imperative was an added factor in the Confederate defeat.
