Confederation of the Rhine - MSN Encarta
Confederation of the Rhine, league of German princes formed in 1806 by Napoleon after he had conquered most of the Rhineland.
Napoleon raised the German states of Bavaria and Württemberg to the status of kingdoms, created new states and grand duchies, and subordinated the cities to French interests.
It collapsed in 1813, after Napoleon's defeat in the Battle of Leipzig, and was replaced by the German Confederation established by the Congress of Vienna.

the German Confederation (Bund), established by the congress of Vienna in 1815, and the Confederation of the Rhine (Rheinbund), a league of certain German states under the protection of Napoleon (1806-1813).
This distinction was emphasized during the Civil War between North and South, the seceding states forming a Confederation (Confederate States of America) in opposition to the Federal Union.
Confederation thus comes to mean a union of sovereign states in which the stress is laid on the sovereign independence of each constituent body (cf.

The Confederation of the Rhine or Rhine Confederation (;) lasted from 1806 to 1813 and was formed initially from 16 German states by Napoleon after he defeated Austria's Francis II and Russia's Alexander I in the Battle of Austerlitz.
According to the treaty, the confederation was to be run by common constitutional bodies, but the individual states (in particular the larger ones) wanted unlimited sovereignty.
After the dissolution of the Confederation of the Rhine, the only attempt at political coordination in Germany until the creation on 21 October 1813 of the German Confederation was a body called the Central Administration Council (); its President was Heinrich Friedrich Karl Reichsfreiherr vom und zum Stein (1757 – 1831).

 NationMaster - Encyclopedia: Alamanni
As a confederation, they occupied what is now Alsace and expanded into northern Switzerland, as well as parts of what are now Bavaria and Austria.
According to Historia Augusta, which states that the confederates in the third century were still simply called Germani, Proculus, an imperial usurper in 280, derived some of his popularity in Gaul by his guerilla successes against the Alamanni.
Early in the 5th century the Alamanni appear to have crossed the Rhine river, conquered and then settled what is today Alsace and a large part of Switzerland.

Confederation   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-25)
Confederations tend to be established for dealing with critical issues, such as defence, foreign affairs, foreign trade, and a common currency, with the central government being required to provide support for all members.
The United States of America was first organized as a confederation under the Articles of Confederation and later became a federation with the ratification of the current Constitution of the United States in 1789.
Note that historical confederations, especially those predating the 20th century, may not fit the current definition of a confederation, may proclaimed as federation but be confederal, and may show some qualities that are today recognized as those of a federation.

It should be noted that most of the records of territories of the Confederation of the Rhine were destroyed, probably because the various princes were embarrassed by their collaboration with the French.
The entry of a Rhine Republic in 1806 is more than puzzling to me. First, the period of French satellite republics ended in 1804-1806, as Napoleon —having crowned himself emperor in 1804— gradually transformed the existing satellite republics into monarchies for his relatives.
The Confederation of the Rhine had no flag but the French [flag] and the Imperial Standard of its protector (Napoleon).

 Germany History
The Holy Roman Empire was formally dissolved on 6 August 1806 when the last Holy Roman Emperor Francis II resigned and the Confederation of the Rhine was established under Napoleon's protection.
On the territory of the former "Holy Roman Empire of the German Nation", the German Confederation (Deutscher Bund) was founded, a loose union of 39 states (35 ruling princes and 4 free cities) under Austrian leadership, with a Federal Diet (Bundestag) meeting in Frankfurt am Main.
The North German Confederation was a transitory group that existed from 1867 to 1871, between the dissolution of the German Confederation and the founding of the German Empire, led by Otto Von Bismarck who was declared chancellor.
