UMD Theatre The Conference of the Birds
The Conference of the Birds is based on an ancient Persian poem about a group of international birds and their journey to find the meaning of life.
Once the birds left for their journey, the idea was that we would leave their jungle home never to return.
The traveling birds used these areas for specific scenes and uplight was used to help give them the illusion of height.

A Persian Sufi of the 12th century, Attar's masterpiece is the Conference of the Birds, an epic allegory of the seeker's journey to God.
Conference of the Birds as a poem is spectacular; as an allegory for any seeker of the Divine, it is sublime.
The Hoopoe (the legendary bird resident at the Court of King Solomon) is their guide and by turns admonishes, encourages and advises each bird on its quest to reach the Ultimate, the King of the Birds, known as the Simorgh.

Conference of the Birds - Story
They are told by their leader, the hoopoe, that they have a King whose name is the Simorgh but that he lives far away and the journey to him is fraught with dangers.
The birds, each of whom symbolize human faculties, are at first anxious to begin their search, but when they realize how hazardous the journey is, they begin to make excuses.
The moment that they discover this depends on a pun: thirty (si) birds (morgh) are left at the end of the Way and the si morgh meet the Simorgh, the goal of the quest.

Attar's verse focuses on a flock of birds who, In time of chaos and darkness, decide they are In need of a King - Thus begins their quest for the Phoenix (Simorgh) - an allegorical visit to seven valleys.
In a play on the Persian word Simorgh (Phoenix) they end up with Si-Morgh (thirty birds) realizing that the Phoenix Is nothing more than those birds themselves who persevered and endured the path through Self-sacrifice and steadfastness.

The poet’s depiction of Australian birds with a mystical context revives the anthropomorphic ethos of medieval Persian poetry.
It is a narrative poem inspired by a classic of Sufi literature in Persian, The Conference of the Birds (Mantek at-Tair) by the Persian mystic Farid ud-Din Attar (circa 1120 to circa 1193).
The birds arrive one by one, and Fairbairn, in describing them by delicate shifts in the rhythm of the verse and hints at onomatopoeia in the choice of an epithet, gives a three-dimensional picture of movement, colour and sound distinctive of each of them.

Ground and Sky review - Dave Holland Quartet - Conference Of The Birds
"Conference of the Birds" basically repeats the same simple theme throughout, but the effect it creates is so majestic and spiritual that I have to consider it my favorite track on the record.
Holland would spend most of the rest of the 1970s playing in Anthony Braxton's band (most of these albums are excellent and well worth looking for) and wouldn't record under his own name as a bandleader again until the mid-1980s.
Thus, Conference of the Birds — along with Holland's album of bass duets with Barre Phillips (Music From Two Basses) — is a very valuable early album by one of the greatest jazz musicians to emerge from the post-bop era.

Not all the birds wish to make the trip, many quit the journey or die trying -- the birds display all-too-human frailties in their quest -- and the few that survive trial after trial have much -- too much almost -- to comprehend of the nature of god.

In the voyage, many birds fall by the wayside, while their leader questions them why they are giving up; these questions are the same questions, in theory, everyone should be asking themselves.
This is unfortunate, since The Conference of the Birds provides, in my opinion, a much better insight into Sufi philosophy than the bits and pieces of Rumi floating about the New Age universe.
