Rosicrucian Encyclopedia Article @ Reckoned.net   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-09-11)
In the 17th century three Rosicrucian Manifestos were anonymously published: Fama Fraternitatis in 1614, Confessio Fraternitatis in 1615 and the Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz in 1616.
The publications of Fama Fraternitatis Rosae Crucis (1614), Confessio Fraternitatis (1615), and Chymical Wedding of Christian Rosenkreutz (1616) caused immense excitement throughout Europe.
It is evident that the first Rosicrucian manifesto, Fama Fraternitatis (1614), was influenced by the work of the respected hermetic philosopher Heinrich Khunrath, of Hamburg, author of the Amphitheatrum Sapientiae Aeternae (1609).

It is useful to recount the manner and order in which the Fama Fraternitatis and Confessio Fraternitatis were printed.
The other volume in early 1615 contained the Fama and the Confessio, with the Confessio both in Latin and in a German translation.
This volume included a new preface (the Second Preface), the Fama, a second German translation of the Confessio, a total of four letters to lend credibility to the Fraternity, including Haselmeyer's Reply and three new letters, and, at the very end, the General Reformation.

The Fama fraternitatis is possibly by Johann Valentin Andreèa.
The Confessio fraternitatis, usually found published with it, may also be his.
The 3rd item is a translation (from a German intermediate) of centuria prima, ragguaglio LXXVII (Generale riforma dell'universo dai sette savi della Grecia e da altri letterati pubblicata di ordine di Apollo) of Traiano Boccalini's De' ragguagli di Parnaso.

The Confessio offered a few more details concerning the membership of the Rosicrucian Fraternity, and condemned those who did not accept its truths.
The most interesting part of the Confessio is the section which describes astronomical signs (two new stars) that had appeared in the sky in the same year that Christian Rosenkruetz's tomb had been discovered.
The author of the Confessio interpreted these signs as heralds of a new spiritual age.

The Fama was supplemented in 1615 by the Confessio fraternitatis R. ad eruditos Europm, printed at Cassel, both in Latin and German.
Its fanciful history occupies a minor place, but at the same time it states that the name of the founder of the Rosicrucians was Christianus Rosenkreutz, and that he was born in 1378 (d., according to the Rosicrucian system, 1484).
The Fama and Confessio have been ascribed to the most divergent sources, including Luther and Tauler, but it is now generally agreed that the real author was Johann Valentin Andrea (q.v.).

The Fama Fraternitatis had been circulating in manuscript form for several years prior to its initial publication in 1614.
The Fama Fraternitatis revealed the existence of a fraternity founded by Christian Rosenkreuz, who was said to have lived in the 14th and 15th centuries, and who had travelled extensively in the East, before returning to Europe with new wisdom and knowledge.
The year after the publication of the Fama Fraternitatis, the Confessio Fraternitatis was also published at Kassel, Germany, again by an unknown author and, this time, in Latin instead of German.

We wish the statements we made in the Fama Fraternitatis concerning the transmutation of metals and the universal medicine to be lightly understood.
While we realize that both these works are attainable by man, we fear that many really great minds may be led away from the true quest of knowledge and understanding if they permit themselves to limit their investigation to the transmutation of metals.
In concluding our Confessio, we earnestly admonish you to cast aside the worthless books of pseudo-alchemists and philosophers (of whom there are many in our age), who make light of the Holy Trinity and deceive the credulous with meaningless enigmas.

The Confessio is a breviary about "the true Philosophy", it completes the earlier manifesto (Fama Fraternitatis, 1614) and in some way it comes to justify it, defending it from the voices and accusations already launched to the mysterious Brothers of the "Fraternity of the Rose Cross".
Many historical figures have been attributed its authorship, including Francis Bacon.

Some echo’s of Rosicrucian ideas and images in the works of playwrights and poets would lead one to assume there was sufficient interest in such matters to encourage publication of the Rosicrucian manifestos in English, but there is no evidence of a printed translation until the 1650s.
The Confessio must therefore have been written towards the end of 1614 and printed for the first time at Kassel in 1615.

While making a rather negative statement about the general situation in Europe, it revealed the existence of the Order of the Rose-Croix through the allegorical story of Christian Rosenkreutz (1378-1484), beginning with his journey throughout the world before giving birth to the Rosicrucian Fraternity, and ending with the discovery of his tomb.
The Confessio Fraternitatis completed the first Manifesto; on the one hand, by insisting upon the need for a regeneration of humanity and society; and, on the other hand, by pointing out that the Rosicrucian Fraternity possesses a philosophical science enabling it to achieve this regeneration.
The Positio Fraternitatis Rosae Crucis is not an eschatological essay.

The "Confessio Fraternitatis" appeared in the year 1615 in a Latin work entitled "Secretioris Philosophiæ Consideratio Brevio à Philippo à Gabella, Philosophiæ studioso, conscripta; et nunc primum unà cum Confessione Fraternitatis R. C.," in lucem edita, Cassellis, excudebat G. Wesselius, a 1615, Quarto." It was prefaced by the following advertisement:--

Alchemy is presented not as the physical transformation of base metals into gold, but rather as a a spiritual process in which the "base" person is enlightened, turning into spiritual "gold."
