Confidence trick From Sterwiki A confidence trick, confidence game, or con for short (also known as a scam) is an attempt to intentionally mislead a person or persons (known as the mark) usually with the goal of financial or other gain.
The confidence trickster, con man, scam artist or con artist often works with an accomplice called the shill, who tries to encourage the mark by pretending to believe the trickster.
Some confidence tricks exploit the inherent greed and dishonesty of their victims; it has been said by confidence tricksters that it is impossible to con a completely honest man. Often, the mark tries to out-cheat the conmen, only to discover that they have been manipulated into this.

 Confidence Trick
'Confidence' came to widespread use in the mid 90s to fill the vacuum left by the collapse of the 'self-esteem' movement.
In the terminal stages of 'confidence' addiction, the goals that the user set out to achieve are distorted beyond recognition, until the addict is left with no goal but maintaining his 'confidence.' 'Confidence's promise to the user becomes the user's promise to 'confidence,' its liberation a slavery.
The monstrosity of 'confidence' lies in the glib way it glosses over exploitation and treachery, and obscures the courage of bearing up under the risk and isolation that is our common condition.

Consumer Confidence in Diamonds by De Beers
Confidence, mystique and integrity can be eroded if consumers are misled into purchasing treated diamonds, synthetic (man-made) diamond material or diamond simulants in the belief that they are untreated or natural as the case may be.
The Consumer Confidence Technical Research Group at the DTC Research Centre, through basic research, has developed practical solutions and instruments, mainly for use at gemmological laboratories, for the identification of synthetics, treated diamonds and diamond simulants.
De Beers are worried that any reduction in "consumer confidence" could harm their profits, and it would seem as though they think synthetic diamonds or enhancements will compete with their markets.

In a world dominated by a nation whose leader seems in thrall to a narrow form of religious confidence, these were brave and possibly dangerous words.
Religious confidence can in certain circumstances mean killing unbelievers for the faith, can mean the exiling of whole nations from the lands of their birth, can mean intolerance on birth control, can mean the mutilation of young girls and sexual abuse of young boys.

It might not be the equivalent of the villagers lighting their torches, but it was a pretty clear sign that at least some of his underlings weren't necessarily disposed to follow their leader to hell and back.
Hints can come through market gossip or postings on a blog--either internally (the modern equivalent of the company suggestion box, although anonymity is obviously limited) or, worse, externally, through selective leaking of memos to a corporate watchdog Web site like F---edcompany.com.
It will be interesting to see, however, whether the lack of confidence persists and how it manifests itself over coming months, and even whether there might be any significant exodus of senior staff.

According to research released this week, Germany's run to third place at the World Cup encouraged consumers to stop hoarding and start spending, with an average household apparently feeling 500 euros a month better off.

 Confidence - Movie Review
In a confidence trick film, it is important for viewers to keep their eye on the ball, but even more important for the ball to keep ducking and reeling and disappearing from view.
Less convincing, however, was Andy Garcia, who puts in an uncharacteristic piece of overacting - although in a film where everyone is wearing a mask, the viewer is left wondering whether the histrionics are coming just from the actor, or also from the character that he is playing.
In fact the film is itself like a confidence trick - a crew has been assembled and directed, everyone is playing their part, and a fantasy is being peddled - and we the viewers are ultimately its intended mark, even if we come out smiling (as suckers so often do).
